I agree with leana. Here's the recipe I always use - it's the one by antonia that was mentioned: http://www.cakecentral.com/cake_recipe-1983-Royal-Icing-for-Decorated-Cookies.html
I am doing a batman cake for my son for his birthday. I want to do the gotham city buildings out of cookies and royal icing. What tastes the best and is not too hard on teeth? These cookies will be given to the kids with their piece of cake.
TIA,
My preference is for Alice Cookie icing. I use that exclusively on my cookies. It's stackable but still soft but can be a bit more challenging than royal icing.
I've only used Royal icing as well. I really like it and so does the people I make my cookies for. It's really not as teeth hard as everyone thinks it is. One tip....My cookies were hit by the sun while drying and the icing color changed, like spotted. And it still looks ok, but the icing become a little powdery when you bite into it. It's hard to explain, other than that, I love royal!
