We made our first fondant cake this week, this is actually the second one I have done, First was choc. The chocolate did not seem as chewy and after taste as this one. Now I did use wilton's premade for the second, and plan to make the mmf next time. I made sure I rolled out to 1/4 in. and actually added extra vanilla to it before placing on my vanilla cake. But even the girls who made the mmf, stated theirs had a after taste. It also just seems chewy to me. I don't recall it with the premade choc. one, but I only had one bit and really was tasting more cake than icing then. Any advice, we are doing our class 3 tierd cake in 2 weeks. I was going to use this as my soon to be 17 yr old boy birthday cake. He hasn't tasted this one yet and I am afraid he won't like it. thanks

I found the same challenge with the fondant so I made my own. Still turned out chalky so I tried again and again until I got the recipe just so but I recommend trying a faster route- try other brands.

Well, Wilton fondant tastes horrible!!! MMF tastes much better. I use Satin Ice fondant and love it! I've heard good things about pettinice and fondx too, and you can order them all online.

Some people actually like the taste of fondant. I have some customers who just love the taste of it. If they don't like the taste then they can always peel it off!

Good luck!

I think the problem was that you used Wilton fondant. That has got to be the nastiest stuff I've ever put in my mouth! I would suggest Satin Ice if you're going to use fondant. I personally don't care for fondant......don't care to "chew" my icing, but as someone else said, you can always peel it away and discard it!

I have used both Wilton (EEK!) and Satin Ice. Satin Ice does taste better, but I really like the taste of MMF better. I have noticed, though, that most people here eat the cake and frosting and leave the fondant. I think it's the texture that is strange to them. They rave about how it looks, but don't eat it, so I always put a regular thickness of BC on the cake so that there is plenty of frosting.

When I use it (which is NOT very often) I try to roll it as thin as I can without ripping...like the thickness of a nickel or so. Then, it melts into the buttercream a little more and doesn't have quite the chewy texture.

I haven't made a fondant cake yet, but I have ate a few, lol! The Wilton brand doesn't taste the best. If you make your own it generally tastes better.

I have made two Wilton Fondant Cakes... One for work and one for the neighbor.

My neighbor has been extremely busy, so we haven't had the time to compare notes on Fondant.

As far as the chow hounds at work... They will eat anything... I doubt it hits their tounges on the way down... No one at work asked for milk... So I guess they liked it...

I tried the one at work and thought I rolled the Fondant way too think... I loved the cake (box) and it was really moist, but I'm a skinny thing with hardly any upper body strenght... so I will have to keep rolling until I get my Fondant thinner. Maybe I'll get a muscle from Fondant - icon_surprised.gif)

With all the comments about Satin, I want to buy some and try it...

I don't have the nerve to make my own yet...

Maybe ya'll can tell me... is Satin easier to work with...? The Wilton seems to dry out faster than I like? Could it be because it is mast produced and sits on the shelf at the store longer?

I look forward to your comments...
