Attempting A 3D Cake...??? Tho

I've read somewhere on here that you should use pound cake when carving a cake...is that a rule or a suggestion??? I'm going to 'attempt' to make my son a 3D car cake for his 16th next week and just need some advice. I was planning on using a 7x11 pan...3 times...putting 2 of them end to end and then using the third for the 'cab' of the car (im attempting a 1989 Crown Victoria so it has to be kinda long!!). Can I stick with the French Vanilla cake I normally make (or even half vanilla/half chocolate) or should I go with the pound cake???? Any advice would be appreciated!!!
TIA
Amy
need strong durable cake.
"regular" cake to soft, crumbly
which is why so many suggest pound cake
another alternative is "durable cake"

i used regular cake mixes for my castle cake.... 18 of them! the second day it did start to lean a little in back, i wish i had used this recipe! Doug, you rock.
I use White Almond Sour cream for most of my 3D cakes, and it's not a pound cake but it is pretty dense.

Ditto...the white almond sour cream cake is very similar to what Doug is suggesting so I imagine either would do the trick.
I made the Wilton 3D train cake for my son's second birthday. I had messed up a couple of pound cakes (made them too dry, overbeat, etc) before and was short on time, so I used the box pound cake mix. I was worried that it might taste bad or not work, but it turned out great. So if some of you are looking for a box mix for 3D cakes, that might help. I'm a DH girl, but I think the pound cake was Betty Crocker.
