Hi! My sister asked me to do the cake for my niece; she will be turning 1, and the main cake will be a carousel. Any ideas how to (simply) decorate the smash cake, other than just plain ol' icing it?! TIA!

Does she have a favorite "animal" from the carousel? I know she's only one, but if one is more important than the other, maybe you can do that.

What if..
(1) you cut the top half of the smash cake into a cone shape,
(2) then covered the whole smash cake with buttercream,
(3) then use the basket weave tip to make vertical lines down the side,
(4) and finally do swirls or beads around the base of the cake and the base of the cone.

If you used colors from the cake it would look kindof like a mini carousel.

etigg82, that's a great idea.

If you have animal chocolate molds you could make some and add them to the side of the cake too like {howelljennifer} mentioned.

The only other thing I can think of is a ticket box. So a small square tower cake with a window design in the front and maybe tickets coming out of it??

Good Luck.

Don't worry I didn't know what a smash cake was until I started my latest job and I've been decorating for a bit of time now. ^^;; It's just a small cake that is traditional made for a 1 year old's birthday. You can also give them the first slice of the main cake as well. The smash cake is just a cake that the child can play with. Get their hands into and squish it. Sorta a "toy slice" ^^v

If you're short on time, you could use animal crackers!

BUT I Love the ticket booth idea!

Animal crackers even better for such a little one.

SCS, I did not know what a smash cake was either until a friend ask for one. I made them for my kids, just did not know that's what they were called.

Good Luck with the cakes. Please share your photos.
