Ok I need big help. Saturday is my grandaughters birthday and she wants a castle cake. OK so I have been looking and asking questions and gotten lots of good tips from fellow CCers and I think I can do this. So today her mother tells me that she still wants a castle but would like to add a mermaid because theme is now Mermaidia. So can anyone tell me how to make a mermaid fin to attach to a tiny Barbie Doll? Or does anyone have any suggestions on how I can add this to a castle cake? Help Please!!!!!

I just did a castle cake a couple weeks ago. I can pm you directions, if you would like. There is a picture of it in my photos. As far as the mermaid. You could have the mermaid sitting on the cake, or make a waterfall with a mermaid? You could use a doll pick for the upper body and make her "tail" from fondant.

Thanks sbcakes. I would love to have the directions. As far as the waterfall idea where would I put it ? She is only having about ten party guests so the castle cake will not be to big.

I haven't done this, so I have NO concrete suggestions, but if this was my challenge, I think I'd explore making a SAND castle and put shells around it...and make the mermaid a major feature. Are there Ariel dolls? (My little girl is 25, so I'm out of touch.) Maybe a sand castle with an Ariel doll...no need to make the entire thing edible. What little girl wouldn't be thrilled with a doll on top of her cake?

With those tiny dolls (they are like maybe 4 inches) you could have one sitting on a "boulder" outside the castle. The body of the doll could be stuck into the rock and make the tail going down the front of the rock. Kind of a "she hasn't got her legs yet type of thing" or add some fish swimming on the end of wires around the cake and make the whole thing look like it is an underwater castle. Seaweed instead of Ivy growing up castle walls? Goodluck!

Isn't the mermaid one of the plastic princesses in the "princess bakery set"? You could grab something like that at your local bakery and just set her in front of the castle, and the little girl could keep it as well, which kids love.

There are some smaller Barbies that are mermaids

There are also the full size Barbie mermaids. I think the Sand Castle idea is precious! You might could even use a light dusting of graham cracker crumbs for sand.Image

Here's a link, the mermaid is one of them:

My stepmom made a cake for my neice and she just went into a bakery that did those kinds of cakes and they sold her the figurines for like eight bucks.

A couple of things,
FIRST AND FOREMOST, YOU CAN'T PLEASE A 6 YEAR OLD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Second, since she is six, I would make the castle and maybe a little moat around it. Simply buy one of those mermaid barbies, I've seen inexpensive ones around and prop her somewhere. That way she will have something to keep and play with from her bday cake. I do this w/ all of my doll cakes. Use a real one, no picks. And you don't have to bother with trying to make a mermaid. Hope this helps. Most important, remember my first point.

I dont know if you did a search for mermaid and castle, but I found 5 cake ideas on CC that way:

http://www.cakecentral.com/modules.php?name=coppermine&file=thumbnails&meta=search&type=full&search=mermaid+castle

Also I saw at target in their "COOL TOYZ" section a mermaid toy with friends and some type of home. Anyway it was $10.00 so maybe those could help and then it could be part of her gift.
Here I looked up the Target Link:

Good Luck.

maybe you could put the cake on a larger board. Make it like an ocean front castle. Put the mermaid on a "rock" in the edge of the water. Kind of like the little mermaid is in the movie.

You know, you could use the Wilton Castle pan as a chocolate mold - I did this for a sand castle cake in my gallery. I really like the way it came out. Mine is flat to the cake, but there is a Wilton cake in the current yearbook that has this standing. You just use the chocolate to glue dowels to the back and stick it in the cake. You could do the peanut butter flavored melts (that's what I did - it is brown in color), ice the accent areas and dust with brown sugar. Sand Castle! Then, use a mini-wonder mold for the mermaid rock and a pic fo rthe body, or just get a doll. Good luck!!

I am making a castle cake for a friend's daughter who is completely in love with anything to do with princesses.

I bought a set of 8 Disney princess figurines (from the Disney website) for $7.99. 4 will go on the cake and all of them will become part of her birthday present.

I have an idea, I hope no one will think it is dumb though....
You can do your castle .... then make either a mini wonder mold or classic wonder mold (depends on how big you want the mermaid)
stuff the the doll upper body in and decoate the dress part like the lower body and tail of the mermaid, the other part of the dress area, you could either design it like a rock or water, and that could be her special part of the cake...in fact I think I am going to do this for my neice she would love it. And you can get really creative and colorful for the mermaid tail.
Sorry so long.

I would love to know too....I liked the sandcastle/mermaid idea...I will have to remember that one for when my 4 month old and 2 year old girls are bigger. Now if only I could remember where I left my keys!!! LOL
