Is there such a thing as Buttercream icing that is not so sweet? I realize the powdered sugar makes it sweet but what else can be used without using Splenda? thanks for any help.

Yep, IMBC or SMBC are my first choice. A lot of folks here love the Buttercream Dream.

Some people add a pinch of salt to cut down the sweetness in buttercream. I have found that reducing the amount of flavoring cuts the sweetness level too.

It stands for italian meringue buttercream and swiss meringue buttercream. They are entirely different recipes from american buttercream (powdered sugar + butter)

IMBC = Italian Meringue ButterCream
SMBC = Swiss Meringue ButterCream

Do a search, there are recipes on here for both of them. If you prefer a crusting buttercream, try adding some salt or a small amount (1/3 cup) of flour. I've also heard of people adding a teaspoon or two of vinegar.

Yep, I too am hooked on meringue buttercreams now! Have some in my fridge right now, wish I could ship it to ya! Just one thing..my first time making it, I accidentally used "salted butter" instead of unsalted and YUCKO! It was a recipe by colette peters. So, just make sure you follow the recipes exact. I haven't tried the ones here on cc yet, but I'm going too.
