Fondant? Looks Like Playdough What Does It Taste Like?
Decorating By Princess3 Updated 7 Apr 2006 , 5:58pm by bodaisy
I am new to boards and taking my first cake class tonight at Michaels. I have seen some absolutely goregous cakes, cupcakes and cookies on this website. Has given me the inspiration to start! I am a stay at home MoM of my little girl who will turn 3 at the end of May. Anyways, I am learning alot from this website and books I checked out at library. But I have a couple of questions if anyone would help to answer!!! First I am extremely curious about fondant. It looks like playdough, but what does it taste like. I was wandering if it was practical or more for show/decorate? Secondly, How do you make your cake mix? Is it store bought or homeade? ANd third is there a way bulk amounts of supplies(cake boxes, parchment paper, pics/rings, etc, could be purchased without having to spend a ton of money? I would appreciate any feedback!! I have yet to try fondant other than the already made stuff by Wilton. But that does taste like playdough. I was told by my instructor that in some cases the fondant is taken off before it is served. I haven't tried the marshmallow fondant yet; I'm hoping that tastes better.
I think you can make your cakes however you like. I personally don't like cakes from scratch. I prefer to "doctor" cake mixes up.
It is quite expensive. I bought $100 worth of stuff in the first night. However, it was things that I wanted; you should be able to spend as little as you want. It may just take time to accumulate "useful" items when cake decorating.
Wilton fondant is disgusting....disgusting......disgusting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I recently bought the Fondx and love the taste, I am getting used to the consistancy as it is softer than the Wilton and will take time to be able to get used to it.
I want to start making scratch mixes, so far just box with a little doctoring.
I bought a ton of stuff already, but I am having a great time decorating and have a wedding cake order in the future. My friends want to get married out of town this summer then have a party and I am to do the cake. You should be able to do basic decorating with the student kit, but don't be suprised if you end up wanting to purchase a few more things just to make your cakes look a little better.
MMF is delicious! I always tear off a bite to eat when I make it. IMO, Wilton's fondant tastes horrible unless you flavor it with candy flavoring, then it just tastes bad.
Yes, cake supplies can be expensive but to start out, I just bought the Wilton class kit, then bought as I wanted along the way. You can also try Ebay for supplies, I bought a lot of my pans there and keep a sharp eye out for Michael's 40% coupons, which normally come out every Saturday & Sunday.
Have fun!
Welcome to the site, you will love it here! I'm from Ky also. There is a great supply store out of Cincy, well close it's in Hamilton, OH. I'm not sure where you are but they do ship, they have a hugh website. It's called Sugar Craft. You'll also find that most people on here do find the Wilton fondant to be quite revolting. Most use the marshmallow fondant{really easy to make}or buy some of the other pre-made fondants on the market. Have fun in class and try not to get addicted!!!
(IMHO) Personally I would rather caulk my bathtub and kitchen sink with the Wilton boxed fondant. Not only is it expensive, it tastes like rice cakes with sugar on it. I hated telling people, who I made the cookies for, to remove the fondant because it didn't taste good. I was enbarassed and always felt like they were wondering what else tasted bad. After I found the recipe in this forum (Thanks guys) I have never looked back. I can make it cheaper and add any flavor I like. Now I have to hide it from hubby and the kids. I'm no longer embarassed to hand my cookies over... and I don't say a word except enjoy.
*yells* THANK YOU! ![]()
Now if I could find a way to make sugar paste taste good and not smell like glue.

Did not realize I would get such fast responses THANK YOU.. I am very excited about my class tonight. I have never decorated a cake before. I was reading another website earlier, it stated that most people do not eat the fondant they take it off. Personally I would not make a beautiful cake to be ripped apart like that. Too much work involved. It seems to defeat the purpose! My sister in law told me today that the person who makes her daughters cakes uses cake mix and adds a box of jello pudding to it. Has anyone ever done this? It actually relieved me knowing that people still use cake mixes. It could make for a long day homemaking cake batter, baking the cake, freezing it then decorating it. Now what about the buttercream icing is it better to make or buy? I have no idea!!! I have found recipes to make it. I could always do both and see which ones taste best!! Going for now. Need to shower before driving to my class. Dont want to miss first day!!! Yipee--Robin
They are right!!! This week is my first expericence with Wilton Fondant and yuck!!! I am in a bind though!!! I was just using it to make some add on decorations to my cake. Should I let them dry before I put them on the cake and should I just tell the people not to eat the decorations??? ![]()

The Wilton fondant tastes like....well,.....it tastes like CRAP! Am I allowed to use that word on here?! I've tried flavoring it with the butter and vanilla flavours by Wilton, and it does improve the taste, but it's still not good. I still have to get up the nerve to try to make the marshmallow stuff, but I've heard mostly great things about it. Also, someone recommended Satin Ice or FondX.....I haven't looked for it yet. Our Michael's only sells Wilton , so I'm planning on heading to a cake specialty store soon. Good luck in your classes!
Fondant is very bad tasting and if you use it on a cake, I would recommend you tell people not to eat it, that is what I do. I have heard the marshmellow fondant is much better tasting but I have never tried it. Fondant may taste horrible but it makes cakes look so beautiful!
Also, believe it or not, in many cases it is better to use cake mixes because they contain many ingrediants that we cannot at to scratch cakes (leveners, emulsifiers to name a few) that make them taste better and stay moster longer. I too prefer using cake mixes and "doctoring" them up. I add pudding to mine or just but the brand that already contains the pudding (Betty Crocker and Pillsbury have pudding in the mix, Duncan Hines does not). Also adding buttermilk, whole milk, or sour cream in place of the water. This ends in much moisture and tastier cake!
Well, most people are not going to eat the decorations on a cake no matter what you amke them out of. Even when you use a good tasting fodant to make flowers and such, they are dried before applying and just taste like hard candies. But I love teh MMF ( Marshmallow fondant) it is so yummy, reminds me of divinity candy without the nuts.
If you are taking the Wilton course they will teach you how to make their buttercream. I use that recipe minus the meringue powder and subbing half butter for the shortening. It tastes really good like this.
I doctor up cake mixes myself. Use one cake mix, one box of instant pudding, 4 eggs, 1 C milk, 1/2 C softened butter and 1 tsp flavoring (vanilla or almond) for white cake I use white chocoalte pudding and 4 egg whites.
Good luck! And happy baking and decorating!
LOLOLOL....I'm still laughing about using the Wilton stuff for bathtub caulk! GREAT IDEA my friend! What I am still baffled over, is the fact that Wilton promotes and sells the stuff! H E L L O ? Do we LOOK that stupid?
I'm a Satin Ice fan.............but do MMF also. Satin ice tastes wonderful...and yes, the people really do eat it off my cakes. AND LIKE IT!
I have done a side by side taste comparison with Wilton's fondant and MMF. Wilton's is so nasty that my son won't even eat it. MMF reminds me of the way circus peanuts taste. If you have a Hobby Lobby near by keep an eye out for the 40% off coupons in your Sunday paper and their internet coupons too.
first of all welcome! and just wanted to say HI KY from TX (my dh is from ky)...
anyway, I made my first mmf the other day and dh tried it and said it was good. I will be attempting to put it on a cake in the next day or so.
I personally make my own bc icing it's the recipe my mom always uses so I just kept using it.
Good Luck on your class have fun!
Hello Everyone!! Thanks again for all your wonderful tips. I am still new to the lingo and was just understanding what MMF is!! I love Cake Central you all are so nice and helpful! Well I made it to my first class tonight. It was a rough start though. My dh had to get home before I could leave my daughter. He was late, leaving me 25 minutes to drive 35 to Lexington in the pouring rain. So therefore I was late! It was okay though. The instructor was late and there was only one other person taking the course. Class was pretty good though! I had to buy several things for Level 2 next week and spent a pretty penny! Dh wasn't as excited as I was! HAHA .. There are still a few basic things I need to get but I am going to WalMart!!!!! Everyone have a good night, or early morning as it is now! Robin

MMF all the way!!! It tastes awesome and is cheap to make and it's super easy to work with!!!!! It tastes like candy!! (to me anyway, it's pure sugar) I always have to "test" it before I can fully say it's ok for the cake! heheee. There is a super easy recipe onsite here. Good luck
