Ok, I already posted about the 2 tier shower cake that I am working on for tomorrow. I am worried that it is going to look dumb. Here is why.
I have only done 2 other stacked cakes and about 20 birthday cakes. I have taken Wilton course I, but with an infant I haven't had a lot of time to practice.
This cake is square a 10 and 8. The pic she gave me to model it after (smaller version of the wedding cake) show 2 very smooth cakes with white dots all over the sides. The border is only around the base of both cakes and it is larger white dots. She just wants claret colored silk flowers for the topper.
Sounds simple enough but I can NEVER get my icing smooth and even at the edges. Normally my border covers it up. I think it is going to look awful. I wonder if I should put a border around the edges to match the border around the base of the cakes or would this look stupid too?
Hi and welcome!
Have you looked through the tutorials here for the Upside Down Method and the Square Cake method? Both might be of great use to you!
How set is the woman on the design? I think I would do the best you can and then see - if you think you need to add a border and she'd be ok with it, then do it!
I read here that anytime a "client" brings a picture, we should always state that it will not be exactly like the picture as we are not that decorator. Great thing to remember!

Do the best you can to make the corners sharp. I'm awfull at corners too and I've been doing cakes for a while. I always end up covering them with something that matches the boder used elsewhere on the cake. I can count on one hand the cakes that went out without a "cover-up" and even those I wasn't completely happy with.
I would use the same diameter dots as used on the sides of the cake and not the bottom border - I think large dots next to the small ones might look a smidge awkward on the corners. I think they would blend better being the same size as the ones on the side of the cakes. Just my opinion ![]()
Good luck and don't forget to post pictures.

I wonder if this link is something like you are talking about?

Someone asked her how she got the cake so smooth and here is what she wrote somewhere on her picture post:

I use the "pat it with any thing that will make it smooth" method! Parchment, hand, fondant smoother, rolling pin, Viva. You name it...I use it!]]
I know the cake looks so simple and beautiful but those corners are killers. I can never get all sides to look the same so same as many peopler I often cover the up. I have tried lately to use a viva towel and I use a "large butter brush" looks like a 2 inch paint brush and I get pretty good results on the over all cake, I have yet to try it on a square cake
Good Luck
I think it turned out ok! Everyone seemed really happy with it and the lady that ordered it was suprised that it was so cheap. She asked "and that includes labor??"
Just getting several compliments from early guests made me feel much better. I could name at least 10 things I see wrong with it but they didn't notice..LOL
Here is a pic
It is a beautiful cake! I would love to have gotten that cake too!! Jen
Thanks everyone! I feel so relieved. I think I am definately my worst critic ![]()
The great thing is that this site gives me hope that I can learn a lot of new things and with practice I can get really good at this!!
Many of the cakes I have seen on this site are truely works of art!!

Shoot! Getting the writing on the side of the cake is art in itself. It's a task and you did a great job. My secret or trick is that I get a tip 16 and make a very small shell border (like on my buttercream gift box in the gallery) and I think you can never go wrong with "another" border. LOL I'm always having to cover something up ha ha ha ha ha...so don't feel bad.
