Sounds like you got right back on the horse that bucked you off. Good for you. All things happen for a reason, even bad things. Maybe you will be hired by this bakery and learn wonderful things and become rich and famous. Stranger things have happened. You go girl.............. ![]()
Diane
Don't let it get you down. Just grow from it.
Happy Birthday [in advance]. It's awful to be fired, but don't let anyone take away your dream or your joy. If picking up a pastry bag makes you happy...YOU GO GIRL!!!! and keep on decorating! Have faith, believe in yourself, and something will work out!

Happy Birthday! I'm sure sorry that this shappened to you. Could be that you were competition for her, even if not intentional on your part. You do such pretty work and have a great idea, an patience, for detail. Keep at it and something better will come along. I know how hard it is not to let this sort of thing get to you. You want to work where you'll be appreciated, and darn it, some people just shouldn't be employers. I've come accross a few myself.
Just don't give up!!
Consider it a blessing! It's a good thing you didn't have a lot of time invested in working for her. It's true, I guess, that when you work in a bakery it is sort of an assembly line and you have to work very fast and therefore give up some of your artistic talents. I don't think it's worth it. Only been on this site for a little while and have the feeling that most of us are itching to bake and decorate. but you know what? If here isn't a great place to do it then why not do for a convalescent home or something?
Oh Susecita,
Sorry to hear your sad news. You'll brush that flour off your apron and bake again! Their loss, to think she had someone willing to learn with talent and heart! I am about to loose my job soon, company is down sizing
Since I live in Madtown you can make cakes and me cupcakes! Together we'll dry her out of business. Ok well not immediately but one crumb at a time!
You seem to be made of tougher stuff, so don't give up! Happy Birthday by the way!
Claire
happy birthday!! if it makes you feel ANY better, i once got fired from a job ON MY BIRTHDAY and on my last day before maternity leave ( i had a c-section scheduled for the next day) they said it was because someone else wanted more hours ( i only worked 2 days a week) Oh, i also got a raise THAT day becaus it was the day of my annual review!! lots of good THAT did me. anyway, my point being. i ended up getting to take 6 months off, i applied for a job at a rehab center 5 minutes from my home (the other place was about a 40 minute drive one way) and my new boss was completely understanding of the fact that i had 3 small children. it was just the best thing ever to happen, so hopefully it will be this way for you too.
Speaking as a teacher (high school/college), your ex-boss stinks. Bosses are teachers--they need to be role models, nuture/encourage their students, show patience and offer encouragement. As a former business owner (not in the bakery business), I can say that your ex-boss stinks. She wanted an executive with 30 years of experience, but hired someone at a different level, but expected the same results. As a human being, she also stinks.
What a wondrful gift for you to be released from such a demonic creature. There is something wrong with that woman!! This leaves YOU smelling like a rose!!! Happy birthday!
Wishing you HAPPY BIRTHDAY with lots of hugs
Your better off without a job like that you would have been unhappy working with that person. Just look at the cakes you have done and be proud of them. There's another job better than that one for you out there. Keep on cakin!!!!!!!!!!! ![]()
Sorry to hear your story, Susecita! ![]()
We have something in common.....I got fired from my first Pastry job too, 8 years ago. The chef kept me for 2 weeks over the March break rush, worked me 14 hours a day, then told me he had to let me go because I was "too green".
I was upset about it for months....but the sweetest revenge is success! I set up a huge wedding cake in his restaurant 2 years ago and he came by and stood watching me and admiring the cake. When I was finished he tried to introduce himself in a very pompous "you-should-know-who-I-am" manner and actually tried to hand me his business card. I cut him off and said I knew who he was, "you're the guy who fired me 6 years ago. Remember?"
Sweet revenge! ![]()
[Then use your lovely new Kitchenaid and make yourself a beautiful birthday cake and take all the ^$$&*#**%) time you want decorating it.]
AMEN!!
Sorry it happened but just look forward. Have a great birthday, get a better more fabulous job, Make cakes that blow hers away, Become the next Collette Peters, Buy out her shop, Fire her, Die happy

From looking at your website, I'd say your revenge was mighty sweet (no pun intended). You should have handed him your business card and THANKED him for firing you.
Diane
Wow Antonia. I do think you got the better end of it. I want to sit down and write a loooooong message thanking you. I have been reading your posts through the day and they have kept me sane. I have been doing a lot of crying and being sad and all that silly stuff so I am exhausted. I promise I will come back to this one tomorrow. Now its bed time.
Blessings and good nights to all!!!
I think I am going to dedicate my life to becoming the best decorator around and as fast as I can. I am moving in 6 months but am thinking of staying just so I can run this woman out of business. This is something I can accomplis because while I might not have the experience I certainly have more creativity and brains than she does. But I like to be nicer about things I guess. I have really considered printing this thread out to show her how her actions are just so wrong but of course I will not do that. I am, however, determined to next month get licensed, start renting a kitchen and selling cakes right and left during this summer. This will be my summer revenge I guess ;op. Now I need to figure out how to build a portfolio quickly. I will start a post on that one in the bus. section. I just wanted to thank you all for your support and giving me the energies to keep trying. Much Much love to all.

Hi Susecita,
first of all: HAPPY BIRTHDAY to you
! All the best and that your dreams come true.
I just read your story today. Don´t let yourself drag down by the things that happend. Your cakes are very pretty and you will make your way. I believe that you always meet twice in life and Antonia´s story proves that this is true. When I was looking for an apprenticeship training position, several pastry shop let me do the internship and told me afterwards that they won´t train me, as I wouldn´t have the skill to do cakes. I really enjoyed the day when I won the gold medal in the annual guild competition.
Keep your head high and there will be the day for you to show her that she did the wrong decission.
Best wishes and enjoy your speciall day!
Bettina
Susecita What an inspiring post you have started. I love all the feedback. You might look at it like this she gave you a HUGE motivation to show her how great you can become. Alot of times the people who do the best have had a lot of set backs. I wish you the best I would say luck but it wont be luck it will be All Your hard work!) All the best to you, and Happy Birthday

Susecita has started a new thread about her new job http://www.cakecentral.com/cake-decorating-ftopict-20201.html
Diane
I think that was the orignal thread about this job.
Susecita,
Sorry to hear it wasn't what you hoped for.
Madison is a very progressive, liberal city. My guess is that there was a personality conflict. Maybe the shopowner is more conservative.
I don't know why she had you doing complete cakes on the first day, unless she wanted to see where you were at and go from there. Did she mention a probationary period at the interview? Most shops I know of have a short trial to see if both parties are a good fit.
Maybe the next job will ease you into it a bit more. Most shops start you out slowly, just icing the cake, then borders, then decorating and writing.
This holds true even when you come in with lots and lots of experience. Because every shop has their own 'look' and they want everyone's work to be consistent with that 'look'.
It's hard to say what happened. This just wasn't the right place and time. Next one will work out better! ![]()
Oh and BTW, I really like your fondant sleepy baby. IMHO fondant is what you should concentrate on. You really have a talent there! Not everyone can sculpt that way. Do you have any art training?

Sorry. I'm an idiot and didn't look at the dates.

LionLady!
No, You're not an idiot!! ![]()
When I saw your post I thought she got a new job at the other place she was talking about.
I got excited for her!!! So I checked it out!
Thanks for all this feedback. I do not have a new job yet but have a couple of interviews lined up for this week so I will let you guys know. No, this woman did not give me a trial period...I guess those two days...haha. She didnt have a very structured way to get me started. I was frosting and piping borders for a while but I think she wanted someone to do the "fly thing" That attitude made me very frustrated and weary of bakeries in generall. I always thought that high end bakeries had more of an artistic, creative ideal. Working for those two days made me realize how mass produced these places are. As you saw from my cakes, I have more of an alternative, creative, modern take on cake decoration. I see it as a creative process...not a mass production enterprise. This experience has me thinking about ways to properly train cake decorators if I do end up having a bakery or even a stay at home business.
Lake--I do not have an arts training per se but have taken graphic design courses, arts and craft courses, photography and painting courses throughout my life...so I do not know if that counts as a background in art. I also did theater makeup and costume designing for a while so spent lots of time studying facial features and bodies in general. I think all these led me to learn how to think creatively and visionarily...or something.
I DO think this threas is helpful...specially for those of us just starting out.
Susecita I have been keeping up with this post. I am so proud of you.
I hope that one day you run her out of business!!
Good luck. ![]()
Madison is a very progressive, liberal city. My guess is that there was a personality conflict. Maybe the shopowner is more conservative.
Umm, I'm sorry to say it, but isn't this comment rather uncalled-for? I'm not even American or anywhere close to America, but it seems to me that the situation could just as easily be the other way -- the shopowner might be a ragin' liberal for all we know. Her personality and the way she interacts with people is at fault, not her politics.
Anyway, as this ain't the lounge, couldn't we have a discussion and be encouraging without having politics dragged into it? I know for sure I come to talk about cake; it's sure a lot tastier unflavored with political slurs of any country.
OK I'll shut up now.
Ariun
Ariun,
I think there might be a difference of understanding here. When that was posted I completely understood what it meant because politics doesnt have anything to do with necesarilly with the two terms. Someone liberal might be someone freer, hipper, than someone conservative in the sense of the word conservative=traditional. I think that when this was used that is what it was meant: liberal=non-traditional
conservative=traditional. I thus didnt read it being about politics.

Hey Suse,
Don't feel bad hun.I had just the opposite problem. I had an employee in my bakery that was well, as carflea put it, rude and impulsive. I could never do anything right, and I am the hourly superviser. Sheesh. The only time she would talk to me was if I had done something wrong. I know I ain't perfect but heck, this is the way i figure it, if you know what you are doing, I leave you alone. If you have questions, I try to answer them to the best of my ability.
BTW, I don't know where you live but we are definitely looking for a cake decorator in our store.
ariun--
I agree with Susecita, lakecountrymoomy's comments had to do more with creativity and not a political comment. I can see the misunderstanding because here we have soooo many different meanings and uses for one word, it just depends on how we use it in the context of things.
Susecita and Mac:
Thank you for defending and understandeing my comment.
It in no way was political. Trying to make it out as such was much more political than my original comment.
As Susecita knows, I am familiar with Madison. Therefore, my comment was well-informed. The important thing is that Susecita knew what I meant. Mac's comment is also correct.
I have spent plenty of time in Madison. For anyone who doesn't know about it: (maybe this will clear things up for ariun)
-It is the state capital.
-It is home of a Big Ten University
-It IS known as liberal.
-It is extremely diverse.
-People in Madison generally are affiliated with the university, government or agriculture.
-Therefore, it has a lot of contrasts. Liberal/conservative, or, traditional/non-traditional.
-It is home to people from all across the globe.
-And,it is a really fun,interesting,and lovely place.
Susecita has mentioned several times that she is more on the cutting-edge, trendy, unique, etc. She doesn't want to do the same old thing you see everyday. That's why I guessed there might be a personallity conflict and that the owner was more conservative.
Anyone who knows me, knows this; If I didn't know what I was talking about, I would never have made that statement. I don't talk about things I don't know about. That's when I listen and learn.
I don't make"slurs"of any kind.
I'm curious why someone who,"Came to talk about cake" put a politcal spin on something that was not political at all? I think that'swhat we call flaming.
Now, why do I have to defend myself from personal attacks on a cake forum? I didn't say anything to cause anyone ill-will, hurt feelings or harm.

I think if anything this comment in itself brought in the politics! It would seem if its polictics you didnt want to discuss then you could just moved on past the comment you found was political!
Even if it was....and just as you gave....we're all entitled to our opinion and definitely the use of our own keyboard!
please don't give it up. I looked and you do wonderful work. There is a differance between the creative works most of us do and the commercial work most businesses do. My Mom and I don't see things the same anymore because when she worked at the bakery she got way to commercialized for my tastes.
I've been doing cakes on and off since I was 14. I learn new things on this site everyday! (God Bless you wonderful folks). So don't take anything she says to heart. Open your own business and kick her tale!!
I feel for ya though. It sucks to be fired no matter what the circumstances are. Chin up baby and go get her!!!!!!!!!!!!
