My son's birthday is Tuesday and I would like to make cupcakes to take to his school. He is turning 11 so I have no idea what to do that doesn't look "babyfied". Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

What about a movie them? hhmmm let's see... music! Does he play a certain video game? What kind of hobby does he have? Is he in the band? Just trying to get some wheels turning. When my son turned 11 (two years ago) he had a "Herbie" cake. He has loved Herbie since he was a toddler!

Well I was going to say what about power rangers, but I don't know about an 11 year old boy liking power rangers. Ummmmmmm what about bat man or some super hero...or are they grown out of that too??? I wish I could help more, but I don't have any teen boys in my family yet they are all still into the hero stuff and all that. sorry just some ideas though....what about sprots. make each cupcake like a diff sports ball. I think teenaged boys like sports.

how about doing camouflage? Boys always seem to like army stuff. You could do the different cupcakes in the different shades of camo and then put them all together on a tray mixed up...

I like the sports balls idea. Or you could do a cupcake cake. Then decorate it with whatever he's really into. The kids love those too, cuz then they get to rip it all apart!

I am doing a baseball cake tomorrow for a boys birthday and I think that doing baseball cupcakes would be easy and would fit any age boy.

I really think that the sports stuff goes with boys of any age. for real....I'm doing a soccar cake at the end of the month for a 6 or 7 year old can't remember exact age right off the top of my head...lol.

11 year old boys are into skateboarding right now. I would make a skateboard. turned upside down. I've made one before. It looked like the real thing, (kinda). My wheels sunk.

What about creepy crawlers, his favorite sport or a favorite character (TMNT is currently a hot one)!
Good luck!

Do you know all the kids in his class? If so you could do the faces with the dots and make them loook like each kid and put their names on it...I am sure they'd love that!! I did that for my 10 year old cousin's birthday party and the kids went crazy!!

If your son isn't into sports (my son isn't, just Tae Kwon Do), then steer away from any super heroes for sure... those are for "babies"...

Cammoflage is good or anything that grosses them out - can't be "cute" gross but REALLY gross.

Honestly, my son didn't want anything decorated on cupcakes, just filled with some yummy filling. So going really yummy but plain would be fine too. boys at that age just don't want to "stand out" or be labeled weird or babyish.

I "ALWAYS" ask my son what he wants... He's in 5th grade and 10.5 (one of the youngest in his class with an end of Aug. bday). he's pretty particular, but has good ideas too. Your son will have more pride in it too if he helped with it.

Thanks everyone for all your great ideas. I actually made his cake for his birthday party. I didn't want to, because I am not that confident in my decorating skills. I like to decorate, but never take my things out for anyone to see. So this was really hard for me to do. My son is my biggest fan and insisted on one of my cakes instead of a "store ordered" one. He was happy and proud of it so that is all that matters. I am just getting started and have realized I have tons and tons to learn. I spend hours on this site, and hope that I will one day be half as good as all you talented people on here are. Thanks again for all your help!

Doodlebugs, I understand how you feel it took me almost 1 year to add any photos or start posting. I think the best way to learn is having these fine bakers look at your stuff, and let you know what they think.
It's really cool, I have learned a lot and I am so addicted!

Good Luck .
