Ideas For Layered Oval Shaped Birthday Cake

I am wanting to make a two or three oval layered cake for my aunt's 71st birthday this May. First I need advice of how to make sure the cake layers are sturdy. Secondly, if anyone has pictures of an oval shaped cake they have made I would LOVE to see them!!! I am thinking pastel flowers, roses, and possibly some sugar butterflys on the sides, but I am open to suggestions!
Here is one I made the other day. It was two layers and covered with the whimsical bakehouse buttercream anc covered in fondant. The flowers are royal icing, which I made the day before. I used the wilton garden colors{I think that's what they are called}. The yellow is called buttercup, the blue is delphinium blue and the green was also from that set. Really nice colors, even included a nice mauve color.
You can go to the Galleries section, then put in "oval" in the search feature and there's a few pages of ideas there.
Saw a great cake at SugarCraft. The oval cake looks like a basket with flowers coming out. You can use whatever color flowers make you happy.

It does sound like you are describing the Wilton Course II Final Cake to perfection!! I just did one Monday in my gallery. There are many in the site's gallery as well. The only other thing I've seen the oval cake pan in that really sticks out is for a bathtub cake....but I'm not sure that would be appropriate..
But I would LOVE to make the bathtub cake for someone one day...great idea.
Good luck.

I have an oval cake in my photos as well. It's the four tiered wedding cake with blue flowers. As far as making it sturdy, you can do that easily with two dowels in the "long" ends or four if you want to feel extra secure. I like the basket idea, but wilton.com has a really cool cameo cake, which I think is perfect for an older birthday. Also you can add the accent roses/butterflies, and I think it would be beautiful.
