I've seen cakes with descriptions saying they used "fondant pearls". Will someone clarify if people make these them selves and paint with luster dust, or if they are a product you buy? - THANKS!

You can buy them or make them by hand. earlenescakes.com has the pearls and some very good instructions.

Thanks! I checked that out. She had great instructions for making them! They're expensive to buy (at least the soft ones)!

I'm handy with fondant, so I'll attempt to make them - I'd need them before I could buy them from Earlenescakes anyway.

I made some this weekend for the first time. I decided that the molds were too expensive so I rolled by hand. After they dried I rolled them around a bowl with a tiny bit of pearl dust. Later I realized I needed a few more so I rolled them out, put them directly into the bowl of dust and then put them on the cake to dry. I thought they looked better than the ones that dried before the dust was on, but be really careful not to press them too hard or you'll get fingerprints - lesson learned icon_smile.gif

I LOVE CC!! You guys are all so great! I love getting tips that I would have had to learn myself from my own mistakes (which inevitably I will make every one of!)!!!

I will sit in front of the tv and make tons of them--mindless and I can catch up with shows... icon_lol.gificon_lol.gif And I prefer to pot the dust on while they are still fresh too--they really take on the pearl dust better. thumbs_up.gif

So I guess pearl dust is better for this than luster dust? I wasn't sure what the difference was, and I hadn't looked around at any of the threads yet to check it out.

One is not better than the other. Litterally the same thing, just that pearl dust has a pearl look and shine whereas luster dust has color and shine. So, if you need colored pearls, go ahead and do it with the luster dust! thumbs_up.gif

How do you make them individually and get them uniform in size, how do you store them, how long do you keep them, they dry pretty hard??

Another way to make them by hand is to make a string in the silicone bead maker, then cut each of them and roll in pearl dust or lustre dust. Just another option! icon_lol.gif

Okay, going to try and reply again... Got booted out by maintence. icon_razz.gif

No need to worship me--I just provided the link! icon_lol.gificon_lol.gif

I usually just make whatever I need whenever I need it, so it can be varying sizes and or colors.

I have a beed maker and don't really care for it. I just wish there was someplace that we could all go and just try things before investing money. icon_lol.gificon_lol.gif

This site is so awesome! (I think I've probably posted something like that in almost every thread I've been in!) I love how CCers jump into help!

Anyone else have an oppinnon on the pearl makers? I was thinking about getting one because I cannot make an even ball for the life of me. But I don;t want to invest if they stink.

I made some pearls last night after reading the info on erlene's site. I made teeny ones, using a #7 tip, and they took forever! you can really only use one hand to roll the balls, and none of them really looked perfect, but I think they'll look great on my cookies. I'm trying to save money to buy a house, but if I wasn't I would probably just buy them icon_biggrin.gif

I'm hoping that with some more practice they will be easier to do, and faster.

I have a silicone bead maker (just got it) and I'm still playing with it, so the jury is still out on how I like it or not. I also recently got an el cheapo bead maker which is supposed to be easier to use but I haven't tried it yet. Will keep you posted though! (I know, I'm no help at all...)icon_rolleyes.gif
