I Live in CA in the 80's earlt 90 the city next to me had a HUGE cake decorating cake pan rental store. I miss it!
Sometimes you don't want to have to buy a pan to use ONCE!!

Wow! That's a lot of pans!! I don't know about a cake rental business. Hmm...have you thought about selling them on ebay or something?

That's really a lot of pans to just have lying around collecting dust.

hehe if you're ever interested in selling some pans I have my eye on that bevel pan set and the oval pan set icon_wink.gif

So I may not be able to borrow those I guess b/c not sure you would get them back. LOLOL

Great idea though-I don't have very many pans atm though. And it looks like you ave the rest that I have.

Hmmm Doug you have more cake pans than I have. icon_confused.gif I also collect cake pans so when I don't reuse them it's not to big of a deal to me. I'm going to have to reinventory my pans to see exactly what I have. It's not a bad idea (the borrowing) but I don't know how doable it would be. Would you get reimbursed for the shipping and what about possible damage (not that anyone would do it on purpose) but accidents happen and the postal service is not always that careful. Lots of things to consider.

Hi there, it's my first time posting, I'm a beginner cake decorator, but I had wondered about that as well. I don't have many pans, and what I was thinking of doing was just asking my family to let me know what they all have as far as cake pans and supplies and I could put together a master list, so we would all know who had what that they would be willing to lend. Like a cooperative.

I would LOVE to have a cake pan rental in my area (WI)! I do wonder if there would be enough interest for making it into a business?

Food (Cake!) for thought...

-Leslie

my first thoughts were that person borrowing would pay postage and insurance -- oh and both could toss in a fav. recipe too to sweeten the deal.

got many, esp. retired & 3-D, off of eBay. If I ever decide to sell, you all will be the first to know before I post them to eBay (and then I'll stand back a very safe distance as the bidding wars begin)

Do you think this would be like Netflix.....rent a pan and when you return it the next one on your list comes your way....easy pre-paid envelopes!

Hahahaha! Just kidding....sounds like a great idea!

I'd say you'd get a lot from those off of ebay. I've bought many cake items from ebay and sold some too. That stuff really sells, especially if it's been well taken care of.

Good Luck with whatever you decide to do with all of them.

Sounds like a great idea. I would think that if you wanted to let people borrow them, you could set how long ect, and have them paypal you the postage and a deposit, and once you recieve the pan back you could refund them the total cost of the deposit. Just check out Ebay to see the cost of that particular pan being replaced and use that as your deposit amount. Its definatly do-able. I sold a bunch of pans on Ebay once and mailed them out via priority mail. It cost about 5.50 including insurance ect. Its worth thinking about if you have so many pans. I know I would consider borrowing one if I needed it.

I have thought for a while that it might be cool to have a traders forum on here...Since alot of folks probably have pans they want to get rid of and others are looking to buy...and from the recent posts some folks think that ebay is a scam (though I use it a lot) Just an idea....I know my husbands forum addiction has one and he has done some good business on there....As long as we don't sell the ones that they sell in the CC store here!

WOW and doug you have alot of pans!!!!! How do you store them all???? My husband would have a stroke if I had that many - of course when you move every 2-3 years the movers would not be very happy either icon_smile.gif

You would surely have to request a deposit in the event you don't get the pan back.

As a general rule, I don't trust people. You will lose pans if you don't have a deposit on hand to recoup your loss, and it wouldn't do any good to use this forum as a place to try to "pressure" someone into returning a borrowed pan. The self-esteem police are so quick to lock threads in which there is an undercurrent of dissention or opinions posted which aren't flattering or complimentary...

Anyhoo, some pans that are highly valuable and darn near irreplaceable (I have quite a few myself when I started collecting 'vintage' and retired Wilton pans 8 years ago) should probably not be offered up for trade.

What would be really valuable would be full-color scans of the inserts of those irreplaceable pans (the Mystical Dragon pan comes to mind, where I've seen it go for more than 80 bucks on eBay) which people could use for a FBCT and just trim the cake to fit the shape of the transfer. Almost as good as the real thing, right? icon_wink.gif

I don't believe that posts have to be flattering or complimentary, but IMHO they really don't need to be rude either. Janice

In case you ever do decide to sell those pans, I would be really interested in all of those that have to do with horses. My family and I live on a farm and my husband and son are really into horse riding.

Yes, there is a dragon pan, and I just saw one on eBay, maybe yesterday (?) I think it was up to about $40. Some time ago I paid $10 for a print-out of the directions, but haven't wanted to pay the price for the pan. Janice

I am terribly sorry that people look to us moderators as self esteem police, but I will say, we only contend with things that make others offended and think we would do it all again in a heartbeat before we allow rudeness destroy this site. We got your back.

I would love to be able to borrow pans, but don't think I'd want to deal with shipping things. I'm entirely too irresponsible.

what does ones opinion of moderators and renting cake pans have to do with one another? In all reality they don't...but I would definitely agree with them following around the rudeness and doing away with it rather than letting it fly by!

but back to the cake rental.....Its a great idea....i would rent!!! There are several pans I've wanted to use but dont want to buy them because there isa limitation to what you can do with them!
