Well, I had 4 cakes to do this weekend, on top of working my normal 40 hour management job. I was doing fine until i got behind with the ones for saturday. I rushed to get both done and ready for pick up on time, but i pulled it off. I had one more to finish on sunday. I finally got the cake finished and ready to deliver, and this was my highest paying cake of the whole weekend. I was delivering it to help out the lady ( who is also my son's second grade teacher) since the party was after a soccer game. Well needless to say i had my first unfixable cake disaster. I didn't laugh, or cry, i just stood there at the back of my van looking into the box. When i went in to tell her about it she thought i was playing an april fool's on her, so i had to show her the cake. Well i offered to run out and buy her a cake, but she sent her husband instead. Now i am making my husband take me out to dinner so i can get a DRINK!! The original will be in my photo's.

Oh my Gosh! That is a disaster!!!!!! I feel so bad for you. That would be one of my worst nightmares. What went wrong? Did you take your corners on 2 wheels? Not really. I think I would have felt even worse that she had her husband get another cake. Was she livid or understanding and didn't want to put you out by not letting you go get another cake? You may want to order 2 drinks after that. I'm so sorry for what happened. I know it will happen to me one of these days. I'll cry on your shoulder when it does. Was this a tiered cake or what?

Ohhhhh, I think I know 2 things that might have happened. First, the ball pan is in 2 pieces, I bet it was put on the cake with the seems up and down instead of horizontaly like a sandwich. Next, I don't recognize a dowel being in the photo. That would have kept it in place.
Maybe this helps for next time if you want to try it again to redeem yourself.
The original was awsome!

Sorry to see/read that... I saw the original in the photos... it was sooo cute in fact I plan to save it to my favs. I hope you can figure out what happened... did you carve the bottom portion off of the soccer ball so it would sit flat? That might have helped but I don't know.. never actually used the entire sports ball pan...

thanks everyone for your sympathy. I think that the cake was just too moist. I did have dowel going right through the middle of the whole ball, but when it started to tip the bottom cake gave out apparently, so the dowel trick didn't work, at all. I was driving very slowly, i probably should of had my hazard lights on. But here in michigan we are known for our wonderful roads, some say that our state symbol is the road construction barrels!!! Next time i will just have to make a pretty dry cake to make it stay. Thanks again for all your comments. Oh yeah, and i REALLY enjoyed the large margarita i had. Probably the only one for the year! In my photo's it's the girls soccer cake.

ive never had good luck with the ball cakes like that. even with dowels underneath for support and a bamboo skewer thru. so i have a golf ball grooms cake coming up, and im setting a fondant covered strofoam ball on top to look like a golf ball. got to do what works for me.

So sorry you this happened, it was a great looking cake.

I had a ball cake last year where the bottom layer broke where my supports were and the top layer slid off as we were driving. The cake carrier was on my lap and there was nothing I could do. I think it's better you did not see it happen! I was able to salvade the top and place it on the base when we arrived. You make due. It's a good thing I always bring my leftover icing with me or send some with the cake when they pick up to fix anything.

Again so sorry, you make beautiful cakes.

Good Luck next time.

Oooohhh, so sorry! A too moist cake will get you everytime!

The cakes I make in the sports ball pan are a dense chocolate cake or yellow, something like that and it sits on it's own cake board and gets 2 dowels thru all the cakes/boards.

So sorry that happened you to you Dee1219. I think we all have to go through it at one point or another. I just remembered last year a whole tray of Petit Fours covered in ganache, I was going to put them in the frige, I should have called for help long story short the whole tray was vertical between me and the fridge. I salvages about 15 the rest were in a plate and our friends had a great laught eating them anyway! I had completely forgotten! Oh well. Relax and enjoy your marguerita!
