Hi everyone! I am soon going to be making a cake for the elementary school where my sister works. It's just in the planning stages, but this is what I am thinking about doing. I will make a 9x13x2, tort once and fill with strawberry bc filling, cover cake in bc. I will also be making a 5x7x2 which will be torted, filled with strawberry bc, and will be covered in fondant to look like a book. The book will be on it's own board and I will place it on top of the 9x13. Will it be necessary for me to put dowels in it? I'm thinking since it will just be a 4"- 5" cake that I wouldn't need to dowel. I was wondering though, with the weight of the fondant if maybe I should? What are your thoughts? Thanks!
Personally I would. You are torting, filling, and adding fondant. I would think that even though it is smaller, it will still be heavy sitting on the cake. Jen
Yes, yes, yes - dowel it! I had a little disaster because I thought this "tiny" 6 x 2 fondant covered cake with an itty bitty fondant bear wouldn't ruin my bottom cake. I was wrong. I couldn't understand what was happening with my bottom cake. I mean, it couldn't be the itty bitty cake, right? I was so wrong and ended up having to do surgery on the entire cake right before it was picked up. blech. Here's my equation from now on. Fondant = dowel.
