I am very new to this and I am not sure yet how to charge for my cakes. I have a hard time with this because I think to myself, "If I couldn't do this for myself I wouldn't pay X amount of dollars." And by X amount I probably wouldn't pay more than $30 (but then again I cann't afford a custom cake either). Anyway, I just did this Minnie Mouse cake for someone and was not sure how to do my pricing. I actually charged her $50 dollars for the cake. After I droped it off I thought I really should have charged more. I was thinking of charging per serving, which would have made the cake about $92 if I had charged $2 per serving (the cake serves about 46 people and had a good amount of detail work). What should I do? Will people really pay $92 for a 2 year olds birthday cake?

Thanks,

Nat

Here is a picture of the Minnie Mouse cake I am referencing.

Oh, yes, $100 would be totally fair - and perhaps even a little more than fair. I probably would have charged $3 per serving for this cake, but it all depends on your area.

Your cake is GORGEOUS!! You did an excellent job, and the person who paid only 50 bucks got a GREAT deal!!

Yep, I agree I would have charged $3 per serving. Beautiful job on the cake. You do have to be careful with copy right laws though.

Gosh! Your cake is awesome and I agree with everything CakePro said! You really should have charged a lot more than you did!

Defiinitely an awesome cake, however like you I would never buy a cake for much more than $30. And it totally depends on the area where you live. I think $50 was a bit underpriced but would someone really pay $90+ for a cake??? Not me! But what a fun cake to do! You did an outstanding job and I would love to know how you put the black around the face and ears?? Do you have a template??? The cake is flawless!!!!!!!!!

That is such a gorgeous cake!!! I myself am horrible at pricing. Someone needs to teach a class on it or something so I can learn! I quoted someone $115.00 for the pooh cake in my photos and thought that may have been a bit pricey even though all the figures are fondant. Now that I'm reading this thread, I kind of feel like I cheated myself. Anywho, $2/serving sounds good to me, but again I'm an underpricer!Great work

I know a lot of people who would pay $100 or more for a cake. They gotta keep up with the Joneses' you know. One of these days, when I'm really good, I wanna sell cakes to those people.

I have been continually (pleasantly!) surprised by how much money people will spend on birthday cakes. I've sold birthday cakes for $250 that served 75.

Don't undercut yourself just because you wouldn't pay that much for a birthday cake! icon_smile.gif

I would also like to know how to charge for a cake, one of my students in my cake class said there is a worksheet on CC (somewhere) that breaks everything down and you plug in your numbers and it comes up with a price. I will need to find out where she got the info from. Apparently it is really involved and her husband is figuring it out for her. I don't sell cakes much anymore so I am way out of the loop on pricing, but this info would be very helpful so that I can relay it to my students since they are always asking. So any help would be appreciated!!!

This is interesting, I had a customer many moons ago and she ordered a cake from me (basket of roses), I charged her 30.00 for it, she kept saying "Are you sure that's enough". Of course I said it was fine. So she pays me the $30 and then went to the baby shower with the cake and told everyone she paid $50 for it!!!!!!!!! She could have tipped me $20 so she wouldn't have had to lie!!!!! icon_surprised.gif

That's got to be one of the cutest cakes that I've seen in a while! It looks just perfect. Is it in the gallery? I'd like to know how you did it as well. Did you use a templete?
Sorry I can't offer help about the pricing part. I'm having the same problems. I do always charge at least what I put into the cake, but I don't think that I charge enough. I guess that I just need to set down and make a detailed price list & stick with it.

I think you could have easily charged more, with all the work and how great it turned out they would have still gotten a steal if you charged the $2 per serving
