Let me just say that my sister has HPV...and she is only 30. She has been through the "carrot peeler" about 6 times and can not have children. If this vaccine had existed when we were children my mom probably would have had us vaccinated but I can't say for sure. However, with something like this, as new as it is, it SHOULD MOST CERTAINLY BE A PARENTS CHOICE and not forced upon them like our wonderful Govenor of Texas has done....back sided and without a vote by the people of this state. ![]()
wow i have been out of town all weekend.
true boys can not get the cervical cancer but they do spread hpv and if you can vaccinate boys and girls maybe this is one std we can eventually do away with.
the whole idea that giving this vaccine will make girls go sex crazy is just absurd. what if there was a vaccine for aids would there be the same negative reaction that if aids can be prevented then your kids will have unprotected sex with everyone!!!! i dont think so. if it were available to boys mine would all get this vaccine.
a girl can have sex with her boyfriend he can have hpv and not have any symptoms and she can be exposed to this and possibly get cancer. thats not a chance i am willing to take. i think i have heard that once exposed to hpv you can not get the vaccine.
what is this carrot peeler thing. For some reason, it's making me squirm!
It's where they peel off layers of the cervix to remove cancerous cells. And yes, it should make you squirm!! It does me too!
It's a horrible thing for a woman to go through. It often makes the cervix weak and the woman unable to carry a pregnancy.
You know, I don't really think most people are saying they won't/wouldn't vaccinate their child...I think it's about having a choice and making an informed decision for your child without government involvement.
edited to change the word "part" in the first sentence to "layers"
i think by making it mandatory is the only way insurances and such will cover any of it. so while im not happy with people saying you have to give your child this i for one cant see not giving my child the vaccine just because i thinks its wrong to be made to do it.
ugh! Ok....never heard of the carrot peeler thing. Never want to hear about it again! That sounds NOT FUN!
Anything done to a woman that lessens her chances of carrying a pregnancy is a sad procedure.
I bet if MEN had to have a procedure similar to this one done on one of their body parts, there'd be a much gentler procedure invented by now!

I agree, I think men have come up with all of the procedures regarding our "female parts"! I had an HSG test done several years ago to check the flow in my fallopian tubes and my MALE dr told me "oh, just take a few tylenol before the procedure because it can be a little uncomfortable"....A LITTLE UNCOMFORTABLE??? I passed out on the radiology table and almost fell into the floor...the dr performing the test barely caught me. That procedure was extremely painful for me!
I've also heard a dr say "yea, the first one (commenting on birthing a child) is pretty rough because you've never sqeezed anything through there, but the second one feels like your insides are falling out"....hello? how would you know...you're a GUY! He was just repeating what he had heard...wonder if he would ever use my analogy about giving birth....ever shit a watermelon soaked in jalapeno juice that was lit on fire??
Not what I expected to feel either! ![]()

but I have been informed by several women that there is one thing worse than giving birth -- passing a kidney stone.
and that (let me tell you from personal experience!) is (lacks word to describe the incredible pain)
SweetConfections, I so totally agree! I was having a cryo-freezing done and it was starting to cramp up pretty painfully. I asked how much longer before he was done? He said, "It's almost done. It's ok ... I know how you feel."
I'm laying there naked, covered only in a paper sheet, my feet in stirrups, my abdoman cramping like there's no tomorrow and I couldn't resist it. I said.....
"I bet you don't!"
The nurse starting laughing so hard and said, "I was thinking that!"
Doug, my hubby had a kidney stone. God luv him, I have determined that kidney stones ARE the male equivalent of giving birth.
Everyone ..... Do you think the great male medical minds would come up with the male equivalent of a mammogram for any procedure involving MALE body parts????? ![]()
dr's can be so....lame! I used to work for this butthead that always treated woman like they were stupid...let's talk stupid...he was doing a pap smear on this lady that obviously hadn't bathed in a while, she's in the stir ups...he's down there, I'm handing him his "tools" and then...just as he is pulling out the swab...he...accidently flicks it....and vaginal secretions land on his face and arm!!!
So from then on he came into every well woman & pap smear with a clear plastic mask on that covered his entire head and a rubber looking gown he ordered from over seas! ![]()

sweet confections - you nailed it....that is EXACTLY how it feels.....especially when you're delivering a baby over 9 pounds! But those epidurals are a wonderful thing!
And Doug.....yes....I've heard from WOMEN who've given birth that when they passed a kidney stone, it was worse than their labor. Not something I'd want to experience!
I'm also on the fence with this one....my biggest concern is long-term effects. I guess I want to make sure about possible side effects, ect.
I was even on the fence about the chicken pox vaccine, because I thought, chicken pox? how big of a deal is that? Then my doctor explained that with all of the kids that are getting the varicella vaccine, the chaces would be greater that my children could get chicken pox at an older age, which could be dangerous. I know that you cannot compare chicken pox to cervical cancer, but here's where my concern comes in.....recent reports have indicated that kids now may need to get a chicken pox 'booster' since they are now seeing cases of chicken pox in children previously vaccinated. What if I give this vaccine to my daughter at the recommended age, and we find out later, she got HPV because the effectiveness of the vaccine wore off? It's my understanding that the chicken pox vaccine has been used for 12 years before they figured this out.
Listen, my best friend has HPV, so I understand the seriousness of this, I guess I'm just not sure. It probably comes down to personal choice, which is why I do not believe is should be mandated.
I think I would just have to say that I am not for nor against this vaccine, but I do think it is a family's decision to get this vaccine, not the states. I believe it is a private and personal choice and one that should be made after much thought. This vaccine is a new vaccine and I know my daughter will not be having it until there has been more research about the long term effects of this vaccine, but then again my daughter is only 4, so I do have a while until that happens. Both of my children have had the chicken pox vaccine that was an optional vaccine and I was not going to give to my children, but the doctor I was going to gave it to them without my permission. Needless to say, I quit using that doctor. The problem with the chicken pox vaccine is so far it is not working the way they were expecting and are having to have boosters. Then you have to ask yourself what is worse? Getting chicken pox as a child and having a little minor irritation, or skipping chicken pox only to find out later on the vaccine didn't work and get shingles when you are an adult? Shingles is so much more painful than chicken pox.
Also, as for the HPV, the new statistcs are 3 out of every 4 people between the ages of 16 and 35 have HPV, even if you do not know it. And yes, HPV can be tested for, it's a simple blood test. I myself am one of the "unfortunate" people who has HPV and I have had it for 8 years. Only once when I first got it have I ever had an outbreak, never once since then. My life has not changed in any way. I can still do what I want when I want. I have never had an abnormal pap smear, and I do go every year. I also have a sister who has it and 3 friends, none who have ever had a problem with it either. It's a lot more common than most people think. And many people do not know they have it. They claim the strains that do not show symptoms are the ones that cause cancer. I don't know that for a fact, but thats just what my doc told me. All I have to say is I would much rather have HPV than have Herpes. Maybe they should find a vaccine for that one too. That's the painful one.
Also, what's the deal with it only being for people between the ages of 12 and 26 i think? Do they think the older women should be protected as well? I have a friend who is 28 and her doctor refused to give her the vaccine because she was older than the age limit. That's just plain silly.
A few thoughts on this, I was pretty anti-vaccine until I had my son, now things have changed, did I give him the chicken pox shot yes, was it because he might get chicken pox no, my doctor explained to me that while chicken pox may not be serious, the same virus that causes it can also cause a rare but life-threatening virus in the brain...ok nuff said...give him the shot.....if I have a daughter some day, darn right she is getting the shot.....why because this isnt just for protection while she is a teen (and hopefully not messing around) but its protection down the road....
Also like Doug said we in the US are way behind many other countries, my cousin has a severe life-threatening asthma condition..., she had a wonderful doctor who before he died made a yearly trip to the UK just to learn what he could do for his most severe patients....we are a full 10 years behind in asthma drugs and research...not all of that is the FDA's fault, but everytime we would come close to a drug being approved (mind you that was used in the UK for YEARS) it would get bumped out of being considered for some other more high-profile drug...talk about FRUSTRATING! I am all for being careful, but when other countries have used it for years and even decades, check out their research...why go and reinvent the wheel.
The chicken pox vaccine wasn't around when my boys were younger - when Liam was 5 he got a severe case of chicken pox , it got into his bloodstream, he became septic, ended up in hospital on I.V antibiotics for 10 days, had blood transfusions & was a really, really sick little boy - now I know that's an extreme case but it shows that " simple childhood diseases " can be life threatening - my daughter will be getting any vaccine that is available to protect her. Sorry this is so long ! ![]()
And just because a vaccine is made somewhere other than America, doesn't necessarily mean it's not safe.
In Australia the vaccine is called Gardasil (sp?). My daughter who is 13yo will be getting the vaccination at school. If it helps prevent the risk of her developing cervical cancer, then I'm all for it. We have sat down with her and explained to her what the vaccination is for but darn it was difficult as she is so youg and niave and I want to keep her that way for a while. It was a bit difficult explaining about all the STDs out there in the big world.
My hope will be that if we keep the lines of communication open between us, she will feel comfortable enough to ask us what she want to know about sex.
I have not educated myself enough on it to make a decision but being the mother of three girls I would be stupid not to start learning now. My oldest is only 8 so I do have a while. From what i have read here alone I think I would have them get the vaccine. I don't understand why the boys don't get it if they pass it, that makes no sense at all.

Doug - I've never had kidney stones, but I have had gallstones and I'll tell you, child birth was much easier and less painfull than to have to pass those gall stones. If your kidney stones felt like my gall stones, then you have a good representation of child birth.

I am among the minority I guess. I have had several abnormal paps along with a LEAP procedure years ago and have been tested for HPV every time, all negative. I am considered pre-cancerous and have to get paps (depending on the last one) every 3-6 months. I have three sons and if I had a daughter I would get her vacinated. Even though my case is not HPV related I would like to have a bit of reassurance that maybe it would help her in the future.
