You may be able to call the doctor and see if the your 8 y-o can get the vaccination really quick so he won't get it, too.
Baking soda in the bath will help, as well as calamine lotion on the spots.
Poor guy. Tell him to hang in there!!

I'm really sorry to hear about your son's chicken pox. I got them when I was 29 on my wedding day (an omen of things to come).
The aveeno oatmeal baths are great for the itching as is the right dosage of benydrl. They make Benydrl strips for kids that dissolve on the tongue.

It will also help if his nails are cut really short to avoid introducing infection if he does scratch.

When my kids got eaten alive by mosquitos last year nothing worked on it's own. I had every anti-itch lotion around. What I did was mix a little bit of everything together and used that and that worked LOL. Give tylenol also because it actually deadens the nerves in your skin and can help with itch. It has to be tylenol (acetaminophen) though and not ibuprofen. Probably the best itch remedy is to find something they can do that will occupy their hands and keep their minds off the itching. Sitting around watching movies is not a good option. So puzzles, model cars or airplanes, cake decorating!, beading, and any kind of craft that will keep their attention. Whatever you do apply, apply it regularly around the clock. If you wait until they itch to apply then it's too late. For really bad itchy spots nothing is better than an ice cube!

a vaccination usually takes 2 to 3 weeks to take full effect so one now for your other son probly won't work. Chicken pox is contagious from about 2 days before the rash appears, til the last one is crusted over.

oatmeal baths worked wonders on me as a child. Tylenol also works too.

My 10 yo son came down with the chicken pox last Friday. I also thought it was a viral infection until there were lots of the spots. Took him to the doctors and yep! it's the pox. icon_cry.gificon_cry.gif

I let him soak in a oatmeal bath, pat dry and apply calamine lotion. I just bought oatmeal and put it into nylon stockings and tied it off and soaked in the bath till the water is nice and milky. It really helps a lot.

Today I bought Solugel (a wound care gel) made by Johnson&Johnson to put on the spots to prevent scarring.

He has been really good and most of the spots have scabbed over and dried out. I am now waiting to see if my two daughters get it. At least it is the start of a 2 week school holidays for us here in Australia and he won't miss out on school.

My oldest DD got them when she was 2. She had a very extreme case of them. It was horrible. I bathed her with those oatmeal packets and put calamine (sp?) lotion on her. That helped her quite a bit. She was still itchy, but it at least helped. It's so sad when kids get sick. You feel so bad for them.

when my kids got it, i bathed them in aveno, and then the next time in baking soda. it helps to dry them up. also benedryl helps withthe ithcing. try to buy some puzzles and coloring books to keep their hands busy. they had them pretty bad and it seemed to help. i also framed the puzzles they do and dated it. they really liked that. they didn't seem to bothered using the two baths, it seemed to help alot.

And I thought getting them at age 16 was bad! icon_confused.gif Being 29 years old and it being your wedding day beats it though.
