Probably a silly question but....

I'd like to add a ribbon to the bottom edge of a 12 x 18 cake frosted with buttercream. Do I just lightly push the ribbon into the cake? Add it after it crusts?

Please help!!

I place a dot of frosting at the beginning of the ribbon to stick it to the cake, and a dot on top of the ribbon at the end to close the loop.
