I made a cake yesterday and did that rope border for the first time, I used the buttercream recipe with half shortening and half butter. I haven't done a lot of cakes but I have to say this is a first, to happen. I put the border on 4 times. Can someone tell me what I might have done wrong, I am at the point of quiting all together. Right now I don't ever want to do another cake. Please Help!!! icon_sad.gif Thank you in advance for any and all help.... Ya'll are Great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! thumbs_up.gif

Where did you lay the border?

Yes, where did you pipe the border, and what tip did you use? If you used tip 21 as the Wilton book instructs, the icing is just too heavy to sit perched on the outermost edge of the cake as it is a huge border (assuming some of your border was hanging off or over the top edge of the cake). I always use a tip 16 or 18 for rope borders.

Piping a rope border also takes quite a bit of time, so in the future, you may be better off using a crisco-only based buttercream rather than one containing butter. If you do use butter, work with very small amounts (yes, lots of reloading the bag) and work quickly! icon_smile.gif

I've had this problem before. My causes were:

#1 icing was way too thin

#2 I was piping on the edge instead of on top of the cake

Hope this helps!!!

Did you pipe it on the side or on top more?

I've done a rope border in all butter in the heat of summer without trouble.

I did it on the outer edge of the cake with some of it over the edge.
Cakepro, I had thought that maybe the icing was to heavy. Next time, if there is a next time, I'll try the smaller tip and using only shortening. Thank you all so very much. I love this site, I could sit here all day and read all the good information and fun that is on here. I hope ya'll have a wonderful day icon_lol.gif
