When my husband and I got married we were in the process of building a house so we had alot of expenses there. We decided we were going to just go to the JP and get married so we asked his sister and her dh to stand up for us. Next thing I know that woman had a 200 person guest list, a menu picked out and dj picked out and wanted a 3 hour open bar(mind you they don't drink). I almost cancelled the wedding. There was no way we were going to afford that. Sat her down and said no!!!!! We ended up going to the JP and having a quiet family dinner with the kids(all grown) and the elders in our family. His aunt made us a small cake and it was so sweet, nothing fancy. Come to find out she had expected my dh's father to pay for the wedding. Now come on, we were both 42 at the time.

Now I don't have a picture of my cake that's handy (we're getting ready to move and everything is packed)... but my wedding cake was a delicious, one-tier, 14" round carvel ice cream cake (vanilla and chocolate ice cream, with those little crunchies in between...yum!!). It wasn't even a special order.....just straight out of the case and into a box!

Neither of us were into the fancy schmancy stuff, and my parents had offered to pay for a wedding, but we just wanted simple - plus, they decided that if they weren't going to pay for a wedding, then they would help us with our first house down payment. So we got married with a notary, went to the cook-your-own steak place, and then had ice cream cake.

Perfect.

I made our wedding cakes
This is one of them:

I have pics of hte other ones, but I"m not at home right now.
We did a small dinner after we got married at the courthouse, and then we had a small potluck reception the following weekend, so I made a cake for that too.
These were some of my very first decorated cakes.

Oh I love this thread.......I found a home baker who did my wedding cake, and my girlfriend did the flowers (some might say there were too many flowers) but I thought it was the most beautiful cake I had ever seen....and at $350 a deal!!!

Edited to say it was 5 years ago next week.

My avatar pic is our wedding cake. I didn't make it, but the lady who did isn't doing cakes anymore. Bummer. We had about 125 people and cake was $450, I think. It was soooo yummy. It will be 5 years in August and people are still talking about our food and cake.

Edited to add that it is fondant with Italian buttercream filling, rolled fondant roses and fondant pearls at each base, and a sugar plaque on the top layer with our monogram.

I love all of your wedding cakes, they are all beautiful.
What a variety of different styles and flowers.
I think you got a real bargain mkerton... and the flowers are great.

My cake was 3 tiers, 2 of fruit cake(and I dont even like fruit cake) and the top tier was a dummy. Covered in fondant with gold piped hearts, gold ribbon and fresh flowers.

This is the best pic I could come up with from the computer. You can't see detail well but that's probably better. It was long before I ever thought about decorating and I had a Wal-mart cake icon_sad.gif

I'd had a baker lined up and a deposit in and everything. I called the bakery to make final preparations a couple weeks before the wedding and the phone was disconnected. Then I went down to the shop and it was empty! He'd gone out of business and didn't even tell me! icon_cry.gif

So at the last minute, I had to search around for a bakery. The only thing I could come up with was Wal-mart...I couldn't choose cake flavors, only white cake with regular buttercream frosting. My mom had to pick up the cake there (no delivery). I had to choose from their book but at least I could get peach-colored flowers on the cake...oh, and I had a great florist so that added a little to the cake as well. Looking back on it, mom set up the pillars wrongicon_razz.gif They're not going in the same direction icon_rolleyes.gif

Edit: The wedding was 5 years ago next month. We'd gotten married at the courthouse a year before but wanted to have the official church weddingicon_smile.gif

No scanner or digital prints to post, but I can describe. I am LOVING the thread and all the stories. I love hearing all about people's weddings, and this has been fun!!

Okay, our wedding was 7/7/01. We had a local licensed home baker do our cake. What's really funny is that there are NO home bakers in my hometown. I hapenned to be behind an SUV with a vanity plate that said "Cakelady" or something close to that and I followed her home and booked her on the spot! icon_lol.gif

I had a three tier cake that sat on the Wilton illusion stand (I think it's called??), anyway, the tiers had space between them but were not off set or anything, and had no posts in the middle. Does that make sense? Wish I had a picture 'cause I LOVED my cake!! icon_wink.gif

I had a layer of scratch lemon, a layer of scratch strawberry, and a layer of scratch vanilla, all iced in buttercream. I also had fondant swags and large fondant "dress" bows around each tier. Hard to describe to do it justice, and it wasn't "Cutesie" at all, but very formal and sophisticated. Knowing what I know now, I know that the fondant must have been MMF, 'cause it tasted GREAT and was not Wilton!! icon_smile.gif It was all white.

I too, got a heck of a bargain because I had it delivered to our reception site which was an hour out of town and my total cost was $350!!! icon_eek.gifthumbs_up.gif

The cake was VERY delicious and my "Dream" cake! icon_smile.gif

However, when I got it out for the 1 yr. anniversary for dessert at a dinner party we hosted, the person who had boxed the cake had left the wooden dowels IN THE CAKE, and it had molded!!! icon_redface.gificon_cry.gif
Good thing we had chocolate dipped strawberries to serve, too! thumbs_up.gif

Sorry this was long and without a pic. Keep the posts coming!! These are GREAT!!

I'm going to cake Hell for this, but mine was a sheet cake from Costco. It was ugly. We had a BBQ for our wedding. We got married in Hawaii (we lived there) and the darn place cost so much, and we wanted to invite everybody. We were paying for it ourselves on military pay, and couldn't afford a real cake. Ah, well. I always say we had a party as opposed to a wedding. I said I would have my big wedding when we moved back to CA, where I grew up, but then we were broke. Now I'm saying I'll have it for our 10th anniversary. I have 2 years to save up! icon_wink.gif

kbochick, I totally understand the wedding on a budget, we also had bbq at our wedding--and I borrowed and beg help from all of my friends!! Having been to Hawaii I can also understand what you mean about it being so darn expensive. I hope you have a quite a party for you 10 year anniversary!

CreativeCakery I would love to see apic of your cake it sounds great.

I think I also got a bargain.
The fruit cake was made for us as a present, even though the person never came to our wedding. She was a fantastic baker and is no longer with us.
It was decorated for $180 (aussie dollars) so I think thats pretty good.
As much as I liked my cake I dont eat fruit cake.
I would have been happy with a sheet cake all the same, nothing wrong with them.

Here is a pic of us and our cake. We, too, were doing a wedding on a $1000 budget. We both had horrid first marriages and we both knew what we wanted so we met and married all within three months! A local cake shop did this cake (no longer in biz) and we married during the last half of our church's evening service so the entire congregation took part. This was 11 years ago and I hadn't even considered cake decorating (my first cake was my DD, 3 years later, in pics with rose petals all over it) but I knew I wanted SIMPLE and we needed to feed everyone with it so we did two large sheet cakes also. It was white cake with raspberry filling and incredibly YUMMY! icon_smile.gif

I only have hard copies, nothing digital.. but my cakes were my favourite part of the wedding. My mom, aunt and I were sitting down in a pizza place eating and talking about the wedding when someone leaned over and said 'Do you have a cake yet?'. She gave us the name of someone she knew, we called and went over to take a look at her books.
I picked out 2 matching cakes, one was a bride, the other a groom. So the first tier was the brides head, then the second and third tier was the body. They were so cute!! And she matched it so the cakes had the same colour hair as me and my hubby, holding the same type of flowers in the bouquet. Some said they looked like little lego people. My nephew, who was 3 at the time took one look and said 'It's Auntie and Matt cake!". And for both cakes, including delivery was $210 cdn. I wish I could post a pic.. and now that I decorate cakes I appreciate them even more.

the bottom one is a picture of my wedding cake (which was nothing at all what i wanted, but i still liked) and the top one is a picture of what i gave the bakery to do (but i wanted heart shaped)... go figure.

oh, and i probably should mention my whole cake was fake! icon_biggrin.gif we had sheet cakes made and sliced in the kitchen of the reception hall to serve. (it was cheaper that way).

oh yeah, and those things hanging off the cake, those are charm pulls for my bridesmaids. they should have been set below the bottom layer, but whatcha gonna do, right?

Here is my wedding and groom cake. It is a crossword puzzle themed cake because that is what my husband and I did when we first started dating. My husband is a big Yankees fan so this is what I picked out. He loved it. Some may remember my past post about my experience with the cake, not good.

Here's mine, but the picture isn't very good. It's a Wilton design and I made the cake myself. In fact, I did all the food for the reception and my cake - boy, was I nuts or what? LOL!
That particular cake has always been my favorite design - it has 3-14" round tiers at the bottom then 2-12" tiers then 1-10" tier then 1-7" tier.

We got married in 1998 but we had been "dating" for 17 1/2 years at that time so I guess it was time we tied the knot.

It was the wedding cake that was made for my own wedding that inspired me get into cake decorating and not because there was any thing wrong with it. Just the opposite!! It was the most beautiful cake I had ever seen. I am still trying to learn some of the techiques that were used on it. It was made by one of the professional cake decorators here using extension work (stringwork) and hand made doves held up with nothing but royal icing. This woman was amazing as to what she can do with icing!! I wish I had a photo to post for you.

Here are my wedding cakes. We actually got married in a little bar in the town of Tombstone, AZ, so I made a small cake to take there to cut and then we had a party at our home the weekend after the wedding.
As I look at the big cake now, I realize that I had set up the stand backwards! icon_redface.gif
