Please send me the instructions also. I have to make one in May. Thank you.
Firstly, it is a brilliant cake and i would love to says thats its mine cake, but its not. Its made by a lady called Mary Ford and it is from her book 'birthday cakes'.
Secondly I just tried to find the 'how to' on my computer and its not working. My DH gets home in half an hour so I will get him to do it. Bare with me and i will get it on here tonight.
beautiful cake!!!! I would love the how to on this cake.
Hey Lexy, that is beautiful. I would love the How-To instructions too. TIA
Lexy, can you post the how-to in this forum for all to see? If not, please add me to your list! Thx! ![]()
Actually I'm especially interested in how the pages are done -- that's always caused me a problem with book cakes! ![]()
Book cakes are really simple. Doug has provided you guys with the hardest part... the template for carving without using a book pan. The rest comes down to imagination. Reason being the pages can be done in a number of ways.
1. Using rice paper and buttercream.
Use a combing tool comb the sides of the cake. Then decorate your rice paper with lettering (trace it on). Curl an edge to give it an authentic look. Apply the paper to the top of the cake. Place a piece of ribbon down the center and add any finishing touches.
2. Using fondant and buttercream.
Follow the same steps above but use fondant instead of rice paper. Roll the fondant out as thin as possible without it it tearing. Apply it to the cake and make the curl by wrapping a corner around something cylindrical and leaving it to dry.
You can also use all fondant but u will need to use the edge of a ruler or something to press in to the sides of the cake to give the effect of pages. You can achieve more definition and aging by lightly painting the depressions a mixture of yellow and brown (experiment with this so the color looks right 1st). Apply Rice paper to the top as above.
Hope this gets you started. Sorry that the instructions are not more detailed but you get the gist.
I forgot to mention, use a piece of fondant around the base to mimic the look of the book cover.
