Hi everyone,
I was wondering if I need to use dowel rods when stacking a 6in cake on top of a 10in cake. They both have two layers....
Should I put dowel rods to be safe?
Thanks! icon_biggrin.gif

I say yes. You don't want to take a chance on everything you have done falling. When I first started I put amini bear on a cake and the experienced decorators almost fainted!!!! Nothing happened but after that, I always dowel tiers.

Yes, you got good infoicon_smile.gif You can use plastic drink straws....execellent choice for those smaller cakes. They are so much easier to use.

I agree that you should support the 6 in cake: dowels or straws can do the trick. You might also consider cutting bamboo skewers to size. birthday.gif

Thanks guys!!!
I did use the dowels and here is the finished cake. It looks good I think! It was my third time working with fondant and second time modeling it. Not bad, huh?
One of my sister-in-law's guest even said it's the most beautiful cake she's ever seen...
Anyway, I'm proud of myself! icon_biggrin.gif

It's very, very cute and you should be proud! thumbs_up.gif So my dumb question is...with using the dowels, did you use a separator plate too? I ask simply because I put small cakes on top of bigger cakes all the time and do not support them in any way other than icing. The more I read here, the more I'm thinking how LUCKY I've been taking the chance! icon_surprised.gif

Yes, I put a small cake board - a little smaller than the cake itself - between the two.

Thanks for all the comments!!
