Hi everyone,

Normally I stick to a 9x13 cake, but for my Brother's wedding I had to do something else. My brother lives in WY and all our family in MN. So after him and his fiance were married in WY they came to MN for a reception. So I offered to make them a sheet cake for the wedding, to save them some money. About 4 or 5 days later my Dad tells me I spelled congratulations wrong. I didn't believe him so of course as soon as I got home I looked at the pictures and sure enough I spelled congratulations wrong. I spelled it congatulations, I forgot the r. Also to top it all of off both my brother and sister-in-law are teachers. I felt so dumb, although besides the frosting cracking it was a pretty cake I think.

Well post a photo and lets see! I'm sure it was a red-face moment, but that's fine. Nothing to do after the fact but laugh at ourselves. Welcome to the board, btw.

Don't be so hard on yourself - a lot of times your mind fills in letters that aren't there. It's amazing, but it's true. I'm sure a lot of people didn't notice, and it was a nice thing of you do - to make their cake. I'm sure it's fine - it will be a funny story to tell people. Maybe not now, but soon. Hang in there!

The picture is in my photos. With three excited kids running around my Mom said it was to be expected. I look back at it now and laugh about it.

There was an email that went a round a while back. The email contained a paragraph about how as long as the first & last letters were in place the brain would read it correctly. Don't sweat it. If your brother & sis-in-law didn't say anything. All of the other opinions don't matter since the reception was for them.

I did the exactsame thing. Only with Birthday. icon_razz.gif It was a lotto scratch off cake and I left the "r" out. Fortunately it was for a close friend of mine, and I just told her that I put a little soul in the wording and made it sound like the song "It's your Birt Day" icon_lol.gif . It's easy to forget letters when you are doing large lettering or bubbled print, you are concentrating on making it straight and look pretty. And then you have to worry about how much pressure to apply to the bag and if you have an air pocket you have to stop mid word and fix that. It doesn't just flow like when writing with a pen. Since that cake I now use cookie cutters and do all my lettering out of fondant or use chocolate molds. It helps, especially since I am a horrible speller and a little dislexic... icon_redface.gif

well at least you didnt spell it "congradulations." Then they would really thing you couldnt spell. Leaving out the "r" is probably something a lot of people actually wouldnt catch, and looks like a mistake.

Funny because when I looked in your photos I had to take a closer look to notice.... my eyes played tricks on me.. your writing is very nice though so I think it distracts... you did a great job, who cares if you left out the "r"..... it is a great cake!

Years ago I worked in a grocery store bakery where the counter clerks would write on the cakes from the cool case...we hired a really sweet high-schooler, who was a terrific employee...except, that she spelled Congratulations wrong EVERY time (with a D, instead of a T). The incredible thing was how infrequently anyone caught the mispelling when they checked the cake. I think the poster who said something about the mind filling in the blanks was right.

It happens to all of us... I most often than not, spell "birthday" without the h.
I don't know why but I have to concentrate really hard or I'll miss it... isn't it sad? icon_redface.gif

Here's the worst mistake I've seen written on a cake.

HappyBirthday

no, it wasn't spelled wrong, but they ran it all together like it was one word. THEN to make it worse, they drew a line from the top of the cake to the bottom of the cake right thru the middle of the 2 words. It was HIDEOUS!! It was at WalMart

How completely unprofessional, i would totally throw a fit if someone even contemplated buying that. That just gets me so ticked off. And they still have to charge what they would regularly. PLEASE.

who knows, maybe the bride and groom didnt even notice. they were busy with everything else going on. and im sure they appreciated the cake anyway no matter how the wording was spelled. when i first started out decorating i spelled it wrong, with the ''d''. and my wilton instructor told me its the #1 misspelled word on cakes!!

we know now!

Don't feel bad, the very first cake I did that someone gave me money for said "Happy Birtday"....sigh....and I was so proud of it too.

It wasn't until about a month later when I was looking at a picture of it w/ someone that they mentioned, "hey, you forgot the 'h'." I could've died! icon_redface.gif

Just do what I do... fix it in Photoshop icon_wink.gif The bakery that did the work baby shower cake spelled my SIL's name wrong, but the photo in the baby's scrapbook is perfect icon_lol.gif (The journaling does mention the fact that the photo was doctored, so the funny story is still there).

My friend bought her last store bought cake from a grocery store, the kid behind the counter was so proud of his cake writing. She said the writing was such a mess that it took her til she got home to notice it said "Happy Bithday"

Now she buys all her cakes from me icon_wink.gif

OH boy do I have a spelling goof story...... my baby sister graduated from Ohio State with her PhD. I am making the cake - tiered cake with lots of buckeyes, Script O, scarlet & gray trim.....pretty nice cake! Well, I call her to get all the letters that now go after her name. (which are PhD, RN, and CPNP) I get it all done, very nice job! We head to the party to deliver the cake, and I SPELLED HER FIRST NAME WRONG. Her first name is Cathryn......I spelled it Catherine. DUH....my own sister. icon_confused.gif My whole freaking life I thought her name was spelled Catherine......NOPE. There was no way to fix it either, it was written in scarlet on a white buttercream cake. She just laughed about it, thank god. I told her that is what she gets for going by CATHY.

I did something similar with a shower cake. I started out writing her name in script and the last letter, an M, I made in print so it looked like an N in script. I had to really plead my case that it was an M!!!

Welcome to the board!

Hey, just say you were in a Boston frame of mind the day you decorated the cake. (Nobody uses 'r's there!) icon_wink.gif

P.S. I know about this because New Yorkers, specifically Brooklynites get blamed for this all the time, when in fact we all know it's Bostonians that don't pronounce obvious r's in words.

Don't worry. I have spelled words on cakes before. I had my first paid cake many years ago. I wrote "Happy Bithday" did not notice it till my pictures came back. I still see that pix and cringe.
