I have to do a cake shaped like an omega-symbol/horseshoe for tomorrow and I don't knw how to do it without it being messy. They don't have horsehoe pans here where I looked. Should I just make it from a big square pan or circle pan and cut it out? please let me know what you think as soon as possible. Thanks!!

If you don't have the pan, then I would print out the symbol in as big of a size that you can. Then bake the appropriate size cake for carving. Then, you can eyeball it, looking at the symbol the whole time. I would do it at least a 1/2 inch bigger than you really want it at first to give you some wiggle room for mistakes. You can kind of barely press in the knife at first and look at the symbol kind of traced out on top of the cake before you actually cut too. I have done this with both guitar cakes I have done and have been very pleased with the results.

Hope this helps!

Miah

Hi Howie! Is it possible you can make either a square, rectangle or round cake and pipe that symbol on top using the border for a guide? For example, if I were to do a rainbow, I would use the round pan and use the roundness of the edge of the cake as my outline and work inward from there (if that makes sense.) Would this be an option for you?

I photocopy the picture I want to the size I want, (often going on 2 sheets of paper and have to tape together) cut it out, then place on the cake and cut around it.

A round cake would be a good place to start with an omega. Cut the bottom 1/4 off and then cut the center out. You will more than likely need a small square cake for the cross pieces for the bottom of the omega- although you may be able to get the cross pieces from the cut outs. If you don't want to piece any part of it, cut it out of a large square.

excellent cutting job! Is this going to be a stand-alone cake or will you put this on top of a sheet cake?
