Who knew that cake decorators could make such a difference? I wonder if these ladies are some of our members?

That Is Tracy, the president of the cake club I belong to. This was an amazing adventure for her and she loved it so much that she is going back again in May. I give her lots of credit for bravery and I admire her very much. I was very concerned about her safety when she went there but it turns out she was safer in the prison with the inmates than she was on the streets with the local police department. She said the police patrol the streets with guns and harrass people, stopping you randomly and demanding to see your papers, searching your purse etc. By the end of the classes she had made friends with so many of the inmates they were calling her Tia Tracy or Mom when she left.

I am teaching a gumpaste flower class in April and Tracy will be one of my students. Wait till I tell her people in Georgia are reading about her, she will get a kick out of that.

This is a great story. Thanks for sharing. I have often wondered what I can do to benefit my local community using my cake decorating skills, aside from creating jobs with a small business.

Does anyone have any ideas or heard of experiences in local volunteer efforts using our baking skills?

I know I worked as a cake "decorator" for a Tea for wounded soldiers held at our military hospital, but that is only on an annual basis. I may do it again this year. Is there much else out there to volunteer for?

You can always inquire at a local church (I'm sure they would accept donations from someone who is not a member). Our church happens to provide weekly dinners to a men's homeless shelter in town and I'm sure that there are always low income members who might need birthday cakes for their kids or elderly members who would enjoy a cake on their birthday, etc. Or just "regular" cakes for people who have recently lost a loved one. I think cakes are a great way to bring a little joy to people's lives!

Well, Tracy is looking for an assistant to go with her in May. I don't know if the position has been filled but you could contact her through the Cake club website.

What an amazing story. It is just what I needed to read today. Sometimes you can get so hung up in your own little problems that you do not see the big picture and realise how lucky you are. Thanks for sharing that!

She is a member under the name TracyCakeMissionary. A few days ago she uploaded a photo of her teaching some of the prisoners how to make a topsy turvy cake. It was a really nice photo. Unfortunately, it showed the faces of the people and I PMd her to tell her that under the rules, she would have to block out the faces of the people. Unfortunately, she has since removed the photo. Hopefully she will upload it again when she has blocked out the faces.
