A friend of mine who teaches in my district is getting married, and was going to make her own wedding cake. She was looking around for people who knew how to work with fondant, and I do, which was lucky for her - she wanted to learn how to do it. I told her I'd be happy to help her learn, and to help her do her cake, because there's no way she should have the stress of doing her cake herself when she doesn't even know how. . . I agreed before I saw what she wanted to do. She sent me some pictures which should be attached to this message. I just don't know how to get one color of fondant on the top half and another on the bottom half. Do I do half at one time, and then flip the whole cake over and do the other? Any ideas would be appreciated. I hate to tell her we can't do it, but, she didn't really pick an easy design!

I think you just cover the cake in white fondant, then do a black strip around the bottom. Then the gold on top of that. Granted it will be 3 layers thick, but the black and gold can be pretty thin, since they are on top of the white, which provides a smooth surface.

Am I making sense to you?? Sometimes I don't explain things very well...

Yes, that makes sense - in the picture it just all looks so smooth like there aren't separate layers. Although, since I'm doing it for free, I guess I can't worry so much if it doesn't turn out exactly like the original.

That's a thought....either airbrushed or painted. That's a good possibility, too.

If you look at it closer, it looks like it's satin ribbon. Like there is a larger light brown ribbon with a smaller dark brown ribbon on top. That way you can cover the cake in white, and put the ribbons on top. JMO...but it really looks like that.

Is it a ribbon covering the seam of the two colours or is it 3 colours of fondant? If it's a ribbon like said previously, just cover the entire cake in white, thinnly roll out dark bottom colour and then cover up with satin ribbon ... not to hard.

I agree with the others, that center piece looks like ribbon. Do the cake in the whitish color, a thin strip of the dark color and then a coordinating ribbon between the two.

Or... you can show her a different cake and use all of your skills of persuasion to help her realize that the cake isn't what she really wants icon_biggrin.gif

It looks as if the bottom portion is painted and the ribbon is hiding the "seam"

I'm pretty sure that the middle one is a ribbon, but i don't know, having looked at the picture, the bottom section is awfully shiny, too, maybe it IS a ribbon as well. I hope she has some more answers for me icon_smile.gif. Thanks for the suggestions so far!

definitely a ribbon hiding some kind of seam (and dots of color matched icing (RI?) above the ribbon)

I think ribbon too, it seems kinda shiny! I think these cakes are beautiful and your friend is very lucky to have a friend to help her! icon_lol.gif

I'm kind of thinking after more closely looking at it, that the bottom part is a ribbon as well. I wonder how it would look in person that way. I think the idea of two tone fondant would look better than a ribbon on the bottom...but then again, if she is okay with just doing the bottom half in a large ribbon, then it would make it much easier for the both of you.

I think they are both ribbon. If you look close you will notice that the same black ribbon is also on top of the cake for decoration.

What you can do is cut out a square obviously larger than the square of the top of the cake, place on top of the cake straightening the sides with a spatula then add a strip, rub contrasts together, smooth and then place a ribbon to cover joins I did the same principal with the rugby ball below. Good luck...tricky but if you work with fondant all the time you will manage

I think they are both ribbon. If you look closely at the part by the names "Rebecca and Matt" the black sort of comes out and goes under the white "card". It looks way too think to be fondant. It really looks like ribbon some of which is under the card. This might not make sense...I haven't had my coffee yet and my brain isn't forming words very well icon_smile.gif

If it IS ribbon. That cake will be a breeze! It's just covered with white fondant, wrapped in brown and black ribbon, matching dots and a white card probably made of gumpaste!

she swears it was two colors of fondant, but she's ok with doing the ribbon. I may try to do the two fondants, but if it ends up being too time consuming, maybe I'll toss on the ribbon instead icon_smile.gif.

no way , dont bother with the strips of fondant, the ribbon will be wayyyyyyyyy easier, cheaper and less time. personally i think it looks better. that photo is definately ribbon, both black and brown- there is no thickness to it at all and i dont know how you could roll it THAT thin and wrap it without it ripping or warping in shape. ask her to make it simple on you and just settle for ribbon...shinier too. i think the look of a thick fondant strip is rather bland unless done really really well.

Maybe someone said this already but couldn't you do white fondant cut the measurments of 1/2 way down and the cut the black to the width that you need and place it around the cake under the white and then put the ribbon around the seam. That would be quite easy to do. That is just an idea!

I think the ribbon is likely to look better as well, if for no other reason than the other is something I haven't done a ton before and I don't think I want to do it on her cake for the first time. It really does look like ribbon to me in the picture, as well. . . I hate to say she remembers it wrong though! So do you just peel the ribbon off right as you go to serve it? I don't think I've ever been to a wedding with ribbon on the cake.

I have seen cakes with ribbons on it and I have made one myself as a border on the bottom of the cake and I just removed it before I served it. Have her find the color she would like for the ribbon and then color the fondant to match the ribbon if you decide to do the cake the way the picture is.

yes, just remove it before cutting. there are a few simple ways to attach it, 1) a dot of royal icing (if you are using it already) 2) a pretty pearl push pin- just make sure whoever is cutting the cake knows to remove it! 3) double sided tape at the connecting ends. it also looks nice to add the same ribbon to the sides of the cake board.
