I would like to try a technique that Earlene Moore did on one of her beautiful cakes. I'll attach the photo. I think I know how to do the smocking (just bought a smocking rolling pin) but it's the ruffle that is throwing me. It looks like the ruffle is a part of the smocking (which I assume is a fondant overlay), wouldn't you agree? I'm thinking I'd use the smocking rolling pin to make the smocking design and leave a 1" or so flat area at the end that is shaped into a ruffle/frill??? Does the edge need to be cut zig zagged to make the ruffle or will pressing the fondant with some tool give it the ruffled look? Also, do you think this smocking overlay is one piece that goes all the way around the cake with 1 seam or several pieces with several seams (seems like it would be awfully hard to handle one long piece...I'm hoping I can get the look with several seams!)
Any words of wisdom?

What a beautiful cake. It looks like you could shape the ruffle with your fingers once the fondant is on the cake...Not sure though. I am interested in what others' suggestions.
I have never heard of/seen a smocking rolling pin. Where did you get it? Sounds like a great tool. I am thinking of tons of things that you could do for baby cakes with it.
As far as I know, that edge is made by first scalloping the edge, then rolling/flattening/thinning each scallop with the end of a toothpick. (The toothpick at right angle to the scallop, pointy end inwards, if that makes sense) The ruffling happens automatically as you keep rolling each scallop.
Maybe she used these tools.. The one with the ball ends would be something that might be used for that technique.. Good Luck!

Basically i stopped short of really making the ruffle frilly. Use a dowel rod that's been sharpened to a point. And instead of using the ball tool like i did run the sharpened point over the U shaped part.

Hmmm, ok I just clicked the link without logging in to that site and I did not get the pics either. I think you need to be a member the pics. I am not sure if I still have those pics but I will go through a few or my flash drives to see if I have have them.
