Ok, I have to make a cake for a 4 yr old. He wants Batman, so I was thinking it would be really cool to make a carved Batman symbol. I have never carved one before but it sounds really neat. I know you have to freeze the cake but I don't know for how long. Also how long does it take to thaw out once it is out of the freezer? If you can help or have suggestions please feel free to share. Thanks!
I freeze my cakes all the time. I put parchment paper between the layers that way when I need them I can fill them and put them back together and crumb coat them still frozen. I would find your batman logo you are going to use, print it out. and than bake a 8 or 9 inch round. level it torte it if you are. freeze it for a day and than carve the cake fill it and crumb coat it still frozen. than wait til your crumb coat crust and ice it. HTH's
i've only done 1 carved cake, and i put my cakes in the freezer for a few hours to firm up. maybe 3-4 hours. i carved them while still frozen, and then iced with a bc crumb coat. let it set, covered in fondant, let that set, decorated, and voila! wasn't too hard, just took some careful planning ahead of time!
We've done quite a few carved. I've never frozen mine. We use an electric knife to carve.
