Best Way To Photograph My Cakes?

What is the best way to photograph my cakes? Should they always be in the same spot? White background only? Top and side angles?
I got a tip from Mac (on here). She told me to use one of those 3 sided cardboard project boards. I used it when I took pic of my last 2 cakes & I really think it made a big difference. I got a white one but I think black would probably give the cakes a more elegant look. Don't know the rule of thumb though. ![]()
I agree that natural light without a flash is the way to go. I have to use a tripod then because otherwise too much camera shake. I think just taking away distractions like mixing bowls and dirty spoons is the number one rule! I think it also looks good to have a drape behind, underneath the cake. I just use table cloths, but i need more. Almost all of mine I use the same one! LOL! I usually like to have an angle that captures the side and top of the cake (if possible, like a 1 layer cake) If it is more than one layer I think it looks best usually straight on. I usually take a bunch of pictures at different angles and then pick the best.
I have tried several different ways with flash, without, different backgrounds, angled, straight on. What I do is, Place a black peice of fabric on table, position cake in center , stand on chair, (I'm really short)) and use natural light.no flash. for tall cakes i cover a large board behind and under the cake.
