I just finished my first 3-d figure. Here is Ligntning Mcqueen from cars. He is about 8" long and is carved from modified rice krispy treats. (I omitted the butter and crushed up the rice krispies per CC members suguestions- It worked GREAT!) I originally planned on making him out of cake, but when I found out there were over 50 people comming to my son's b-day party this saturday, I had to rethink my plan. So now I will be making a 10" and 8" tiered cake. If you have any sugguestion for decorating those I would love ideas. So far I think I am just going to put black and white checkers on the sides and pipe and simplet border in red.

Well thanks for taking a look. I got so much great advice from so many CC members!!! I think that my design is pretty simple compaired to some of the really awesome ones out there, but everone has to start somewhere.

that is so great looking. I like your idea for the checked cake with red boarder. It wont distract from McQueen. Is he going to be a topper??

BTW good luck with the party. 50 people?? I couldnt imagine it

It's fantastic!!! My 3 sons all want Lightning Mcqueen cakes for their birthdays this year, and I'll probably do something similar. I'll have to save your photo....

Looks great! I am making one out of cake (hopefully) this weekend!

What does not adding the butter do for the rice Krispies? Is it easier to work with? I was thinking of doing my wheels out of it.

Did you use mmf? I am having a bit of trouble making red. Thanks!

I think this is great. Please post the instructions icon_biggrin.gificon_smile.gificon_biggrin.gif if you don't mind!! I would do the tiered cake and maybe have road looping around the tiers. Maybe if you have time make a checkered flag at the end of the road. I would take ideas from the movie, like the cones from the "coy cone hotel" and maybe the piston cup! boy I must think you have all the time in the world huh??

You did a super job on that cake thumbs_up.gif

As far as the other cakes, one idea is to make them look like the mountain scenery with a road on it. Any other ideas anyone?

He looks awesome. Good luck with the decorating of your other cakes.
Everyone will have a blast.

I made a Blue Dinoco McQueen 2 weeks ago for my oldest w/ BC and wafer paper. It worked out great. All I did for the base cake (had a lot of people coming too.) was to ice it beige ( I was running out of time and Ideas.) It's in my photos.

Wow! Thank you all for the wonderful feedback! My son saw it this morning (he's turning 4 this weekend) and he said "Oh Mama, you made me Lightning Mcqueen for my party. You are such a good mama." haha =) The most important thing is that he knows what it is.

So since so many of you asked for directions... here they are:

1. Make up rice krispy's- I used a double batch for this (10 cups RK's smashed up in a bag and 1 large 16 oz bag of MM's) The reason I didn't include the butter was because the party is not until saturday and I started making this monday night- I was worried that the butter would sour by then. I am not really planning on having anyone eat this, though they could because it still tastes pertty good.

So melt, mix, and spread into a large loaf pan (9"). Press down hard to form. At this point you can see why crushing the RK's was a good idea because it will be less lumpy than regular RKT's. I also made it slope down a little in the front to help save time on the carving later. Let set for at leat 1 hour or until cool.

2. Take out of pan and Carve away! It helped me to have one of my son's little Lm cars handy for proportions.

3. Cover with a layer of very thick buttercream. I made it a lot thicker than I would cover a cake with so that it would further assist me in getting a smooth surface for the MMF. Keep covered so BC stays soft until MMF is ready.

4. Make up some red MMF (I ALWAYS add the food coloring to the melted MM's before adding the PS. It makes it so much easier than trying to kneed it all in later). I did use quite a bit- about 1/4 of a wilton jar to get the color I wanted.

5. I set my Lightning on some wax paper and set him on top of a smaller loaf pan so when I place the mmf on him it would hang down. I then smoothed it on and tucked the mmf under the bottom to give it a nice finished edge.

6. From here it was all pretty much free hand and random cookie cutters that I found. (I even used a marker cap that I cleaned out because it was the right size for a circle I needed) I did make up a template for the lightning bolts on the side because I wanted them to match eachother. NOTE: Make sure that you cover your cardstock template in tape before trying to use it- I learnind this the hard way and had my lovely cut out lightning bolts stick to the template so I had to start over.

I made up 1/2 a batch of MMF for all the accents and had plenty left over afterwards. I basically colored as i went. For the LB and the 95's I used clear vanilla extract and wilton colors to paint the orange and red. Just be careful because if you get them too wet the MMf starts to break up.

7. Last I piped the Rust-eze name on with yellow RI.

Well I hope this helps. I am so happy to share. I hope to see what you all come up with very soon. I got so much great advice from other CC member's before I started and I know that is what helped make it great.
