My friend's daughter's birthday invitation has flip flops on them with flower on top of the toe part. She wants me to make a cake the shape (3d) of the flip flops. Did anyone ever do something like that? Would I use MMF or fruit rollups for the strap part? I am excited to do it but nervous if I don't see a photo sample of it.

I like the idea of the fruit roll ups for the straps. Very shiny and colorful.

I think fruit-by-the-foot would work great. Someone here has made a flip-flop cake. I think that's what they used. They also plated the cake on top of "sand." It was too cute! Here's a pic I found on the web too. Hope it helps.

I just made a flip flop cake for my sister's wedding shower since it was a beach theme. I made two flip flops by carving the shape from a quarter sheet cake and made the thong part from really thick rope licorice that I covered in MM fondant. Then I added a small MM fondant bow to each thong part on the front.

You can find a picture of flip flops on this site:

You can either do a buttercream transfer, or cut them out and place them on top of a sheet cake.
good luck.

I saw the one that was posted here and it's perfect! I will ofcourse post a photo once it's completed. Thanks again for your ideas. My friend wants me to make a practice one and so that's double work for me. She wants to make sure I can do it. I have 3 cake orders to do for next week and hers is due the following week. Pray that I have strength to do all this. I'm due with baby #2 in 8 weeks.

I have a Betty Crocker book w/ party cakes in it. I bought it at my grocery store near the cash register.

Here are the directions:

1. Use a 13X9 in. pan use whatever cake recipe you want. Bake & then cool 1 hour.
2. When cake is cooled place cake on wrapped cake board.
3. Cut lenghtwise in half.
4. Continue cutting each piece to form a flip-flop shape. Place pieces on tray. Freeze pieces uncovered about 1 hour for easier frosting if desired.
5. Frost the sides of the flip flops one color & the top another color.
6. To make straps cut 2-6" pieces from fruit roll up. Place roll up straps on your cake.
7. Top roll up with a flower. Real, royal icing, BCI, fondant or silk etc...
8. Also use any design or decoration you would like on the flip flop.

The recipe shows m&m's around the sides of the flip flops. I know anyone on CC can be a whole lot more creative then that!! I hope this helped out.
I was planning on making a tropical cake for the 30th but I think I'm going to make the flip flops instead! A lot easier! Plus I have a bridal shower cake due the same day!

HAPPY BAKING~
