I am doing (trying to do) a 12-10-6 tiered cake. If I am using dowels and cake boards (not separator plates) what happens when I take the cake apart for cutting. Will the tiers or cake boards have frosting all on the bottom? What do I need to do or what am I doing wrong?
Put shredded coconut between cake board and cake. This might help.

Here are a few solutions that people use.
Place a piece of parchment paper (cut the the size of the board) between the icing and the bottom of the board.
Cut the dowels slightly longer than the cake height so the cake will sit slightly above the icing. The border will hide the small gap.
Sprinkle the area the cake will sit on with icing sugar (cocoa powder if icing is chocolate), or shredded coconut (I don't recommend this due to allergy alert).
Hope this helps
