Hello everyone,
I have been working on a bow for a wedding cake for a little over a month. This is my second attempt to make this bow and now I am icon_cry.gif crying my eyes out. I have four days left before the wedding and I really don't know what to do about this mess.

Please someone help me out. I think I bit off more then I can chew with this wedding cake.

Note: there are a few pieces that don't belong they are broken pieces to hold the bow loops up.

thanks eveyone

Just breath and stop touching it! Walk away, get out a glass and have yourself a little drink.

From the photo's it doesn't look bad at all! And four days is plenty of time to do over if you need to. Did you use plain fondant? Add gum-tex? Is it gum paste? How long did you leave it to dry? Is your house humid? Did you allow enough time for them to dry again after you painted the loops? Could be anything......darn bow loops.

The bow loops were dry and ready to go. It the way they are placed. I seem to have holes all over the place and to me just looks really yucky!

They are MMF with gum-tex, the only thing is that they took me 2 days to paint and I don't think I have two more days to paint. I am cooking the cakes as we speak. The BC is all ready to go, just have to do my MMF for the cake and that is tomorrows job. Then I will be ready to ice is thrusday and put is together friday night and the wedding is saturday.

The bride wants ribbon around the base of each layer of cake (3 tiers, 16, 12, icon_cool.gif, I was thinking if I can't salvage this bow (now it is all apart again) I thought maybe use the same wire ribbon to make a bow for the top instead of using the Yucky fondant bow I created.

Any ideas???????????

it looks great to me. i think the reason you say it seems to have holes all over is because the inside of the ribbon is lighter. it highlights all the loops, but not in a bad way(imo).

I think that's a very pretty bow.

If you're looking for a way to make the "holes" less obvious, try either making whatever you're sticking the loops together with (buttercream, fondant, chocolate, whatever) the same color as the loops. Or, at the bakery we would sometimes stick different sizes of edible pearls down into the bow to hide the buttercream "glue." That always looked pretty and made it a little more fancy.

I personally would want the ribbon going around to match the ribbon on top! But that's just me! Is the bride set on the sugar ribbon? It would be a shame to waste all of that work though. The black is perfect.

For some reason, it looks like you have one too many layers of loops. If you cover up the bottom layer it looks perfectly round?

Anyone else see what it could be?

Well, it's official! I am loosing it. I just took out the top tier from the oven and more then half of the bottom stuck to the pan. OK now what else can go wrong with the wedding cake.

I was so hyped up about getting this contract and now I can't stop crying. I know stop and take out a glass and have a drink. Well, I just did. IT'S NOT HELPING!!!!!

OK I will try another drink see if that helps. LOL

Breath In Deep! Hold it icon_eek.gif Hold it icon_eek.gif ok Breath out ! Again! Deep Breath! and let it out ! Now SCREAM!! Then laugh! See Feel much better!

Ok so the cake stuck in the pan.... Just a minor set back Drag out the mixer and whip up another one. Look at the disaster as a little snack break to step back and recollect your thoughts... The bow looks good but I think it is that bottom layer that makes it look akward like it is to bulky. Not sure what size cake your mmaking but thats what I would do.. take the bottom layer off and the add staight streamers in its place that drape slightly over the edges of cake.. Really depending on what you are going for... Your gonna do a GREAT GREAT job! Relax... and remember to Breath... Deep breaths...lol....

I know that by the time I post this it will most likely be too late for you but maybe you can use my suggestion for next time.

Bow - Perhaps next time when you are making your MMF you should color it the color that you are wanting the bow. Then you won't have the lighter inside icon_smile.gif

Time for new bow - If the bride doesn't care whether you use the fondant bow or a ribbon bow, I'd go ahead and go with the ribbon bow. It will match the rest of the ribbon on the cake.

Cake Sticking - I know that some people don't think it is necessary to use parchment paper but after my first cake sticking situation I use it for all my cakes now. They never ever stick and they come out so perfect. I also use a parchment collar so they can rise nice and high.

Hope this helps. I know you're gonna do a fantastic job and I can't wait to see the pic icon_smile.gif

The black and white has a very classic look about it. I like it. It would be really classic if you were doing a white cake with black dots.

That has got to really bite having the cake stick. Thankfully I have only had That problem once. It was the ONE time I decide to grease and flour my cake pans. All the other times I just lightly coat the pan with Crisco. So after that... no more flour I just stick to what works best for me.

If it's not too late, I agree with lazy susan, make the bow out of regular ribbon..it's easier, and it will match the ribbon on the cake..uniformity, uniformity, uniformity. I have all the confidence in the world that this wedding cake will look awesome. You know that any time you are on a deadline, anything that can go wrong, will go wrong, so you just have to learn to laugh at the irony of it all, and keep on, keepin' on. It will all end up fine.
BTW, I think the bow you made looked fine, it's way better than I could do, and it's obvious you put alot of work into it...icon_smile.gif.
Just stay calm and keep your eye on the prize which is completing the cake, and the satisfaction that's it's all going to be over with soon.

I had a really hard time getting bows down. You couldlook at my website and see.. Some are just aweful. Truth is though that the clients still think they are great. My tip and what has helped me is that I make the bow loops wide now. Also you can make extra tails... fill in some holes with those if you have any. Good luck. I am sure your cake will be beautiful!

I like the idea of makeing a new bow out of ribbon. How would you do that though??
I would go buy a fancy bow maker thingy, but i'm sure theres an easier way..

I feel for you!
My daughter dropped my one and only bow down the stairs...shattered to bits. Your bow really looks salvageable to me.
As far as your cake sticking to the pan...if you line your pans with parchment paper they will NEVER stick. After they cool just run knife around the edges and it will pop right out...peel paper off and you will have a nice smooth top too.
Good luck and please post your finished cake pic.
These things have a way of working out.

I think the bow is coming out great! but I can tell you what I discovered that helped me making ribbon bows on my cakes, I make each ribbon for the bow a bit wider than yours, then I don't need so many of them to form the bow... also I prefer to dye it to give a more uniform color and plus, you save a lot of time decorating later on...

Hope all turned out well for your cake!

Hey, if you go to Michaels and pick out your ribbon the florist will make a nice big bow for you. It will take a lot of pressure off of you. By the way, I have been drying bow loops for about a week and yesterday when I came home half of them were in pieces because my daughter thought that she could wear them as bracelets. Cheer up and sit down for a minute. It will be fine!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Check your settings on your browser it might not let you see the images. Do they show with a red X in a box and no picture that means your computer is blocking the pictures
