I am so stunned and so sad right now.

I'm a Wilton instructor who teaches at Garden Ridge, and the Wilton supervisor just called to let me know that as of this afternoon, Garden Ridge's corporate people made the decision to cease offering cake classes effective immediately. We are allowed to finish any classes we are currently teaching and that's it.

DAMN! icon_cry.gif

I just looked at the Garden Ridge website and there weren't as many stores as I thought there were. Only 35...but that's still 35 Wilton instructors who are now out of a job. icon_sad.gif

I am so sorry to here that. Are there other places such as Micheal's or Hobby Lobby in the Houston area that you can teach at, and also can you get all the names of your past and present students to take with you when you have to go, so you can notify the ones who wish to continue taking from you if you find a new place? Once again my heart goes out to you and I wish you the best of luck in the immediate future.

Sherri,

I hope the Garden Ridge people know that they are losing the most talented instructor in the world.....
did they give a reason as to why? Are the other classes cancelled as well (floral design, bow tying, etc.)

I hope you can find another place to work.

That is crazy. I would love to know the reason.

Oh Cakepro, so sorry to hear that! I hope you can find another place to teach - I'm sure you will! There used to be a class here through a local high school through continuing education. Maybe that's an option for you too.

About a month ago, I called all the Hobby Lobby's and Michael's within 20 miles of me to see if they had any openings because I was looking to pick up a second account. All the stores I called had instructors and classes going. The Wilton people have a meeting in the morning to try to help the displaced instructors find new accounts but it's going to be difficult (at least where I live). icon_sad.gif

Thanks for your kind words. We are allowed to take our signup books with us so we can retain all of the students' information to take with us to new accounts.

(Kim, thanks. icon_wink.gif Our store hasn't had floral classes since around the time your class finished. It was too good to be true - no competition for the classroom! ARGH)

That stinks! I'm so sorry. Our Garden Ridge went under and I really miss it. I loved shopping there.

here is a thought .... why don't you try to advertize doing it out of your home or something. I started taking classes late last year. A friend of mine got me interested. Her husband travels often she could never take the usual evening classes. She contacted the wilton instructor and the lady told her she would be willing to set up a morning class for at least 4 people. She now has 6 people in the class .... the more I tell people that this is what I'm doing ...the more people I hear that are interested and don't really know where to start. I'm going to be teaching a few friends in the afternoon what I've learned so far .. I'm not charging them .. it's more of a playdate for our kids and one for us too thumbs_up.gif ...... but if the trend continues I may just consider charging in the future.
