We have a lot of stray cats around our house, over 15! For the past 5 years we have been shooing them away from our home just to have them hiss and spray in front of us. (not to mention my 2 cats are scared of them ---because as soon as they step out of the house they try to beat our 2 cats up) Well, it about 70 degrees outside today and I'm in my kitchen and smell a strong odor of cat pee coming through our side door and it's completely shut! I'm about 4 feet away from the door and can still smell it! They have been using our side porch as their own personal toilet and have also been spraying around our front door. I"M SICK OF THIS! How do I get rid of these horrid cats. I've talked to the animal shelters and no one will take them without a $50 donation per cat. THERE IS ABOUT 18 OF THEM, we can't afford that.

My main question is actually how can I get rid of this smell????---my house reeks right now, and I'm upset.

Is there a local advocate, through a newspaper or television station, maybe in a larger city near you? Many people here have found that when bureaucracy does not answer their requests for help, they can call on a certain TV news station to come to their aid. It appears that as soon as the news makes public knowledge of stories like yours, the local authorities do not hesitate to act.

Your cats are in danger of developing feline leukemia. You do not know if any of those cats have it or not, and from what I have been told by a vet, any contact, even stepping in their urine or feces, can pass it onto your cats when they clean themselves.

Also, contact pet stores in your area and ask if they have anything that will disuade these cats from entering your yard. I know green apple scent works on some animals, but I do not know if it works on feral cats.

I was told to sprinkel chili pepper under my kids play area because they were going potty under there. It didn't really work though.

The smell isn't in my carpet because they are stays but outside and the smell is filtering into the house like crazy.

I'll try any product to get rid off this, I looked outside at my wooden porch to see the damage these strays did over the winter and the wood looks awful! They also sprayed directly on the door itself. Urine is about a foot up the door. My kids are sneezing like crazy right now and my allergies are kicking in because of it. These cats are EVIL!!! I didn't even think about the feline leukemia. My black cat has totaly changed within the last year. She doesn't want petted, runs from the kids and is acting strange---I'm calling the vet tomorrow! icon_cry.gif

Do you think that the yellowish orange stuff works outside?

That's a good idea about the tv stations. Maybe they can help.

The orange cleaner will only remove part of the odor. Cat spray has a certain oil, or something in it, that makes it more permanent.

To remove the smell permanently, you can purchase gallons and gallons of that stuff at the supermarket that has the enzyme in it. But to tell you truthfully, my son-in-law was telling me about a house he renovated, which was infested with cat smell and feces. He used straight bleach on all the surfaces, and it worked.

I would clean the area with distilled white vinegar and baking soda maybe, let it soak for as long as possible, without it drying, and hose it off with the highest pressure water you can get. If you are willing, maybe even after the cleaning put some KILZ down. It's a primer/sealer and it really helps stains and odors from seeping back through and anymore "messes" from absorbing into whatever material your side porch is made out of.
I just thought of something else...I've heard of people using tomato paste to get rid of skunk odors. I would think that if it works on skunk spray surely it would work on cat spray.

The fact that the weather is getting warmer and in some places more humid that can really intesify the smells. Cat urine has ammonia in it so I would also imagine that the fumes from it are toxic. cats are just as territorial as dogs, usually more so and that probably why they are spraying so much, kind of an, "I was here first" game amoungst the little felines.
I love cats and dogs but I agree that 18 is WAAAAY too many to have hanging around. Definately get your kitties checked out just for good measure and updated on any vaccinations if needed and don't forget to wear something to protect your hands and other body parts while you are cleaning.

Cats are repelled by ammonia. I used to spray that on our garbage bags when they were set out at the curb to ward off the neighborhood cats from tearing it up. Maybe until you find a solution you can spritz ammonia around your porch? I know that stinks too, but at least it wears off.

Shoot, I'd trap those cats and put the whole lot of them on the front porch of the humane society or local kill shelter half an hour before they open for the day. That's ridiculous they want 50 bucks per cat. It's not like these feral cats are going to be re-domesticated pet animals.

Another thing to try is to write to some cat rescue agencies that have websites online, and ask them if they know of an organization in your vicinity. Is there an animal rights organization in your state? Check the keyword heading at superpages to see if there is a telephone number.

www.superpages.com

PETA, although vigilante at times (no offense, I have friends who are members!), is also a good source for information. They may be able to come to your aid, also, with advocacy within the local humane society.

I know this is going to sound horrible but what we do to cats that are problems is shoot them.

First you have to know that we live a couple hundred miles from the nearest humane society so there isn't a way we can drop them off. It would be over 2 hours with a pissing cat in my vehicle and that isn't going to happen.
We also don't do anything to cats that wander through the yard but when they start harassing our pets or peeing on the house my husband starts watching for them.
The nearest vet to put them down is 50 minutes away and she tells people that a well placed bullet is as effective as giving them a shot.

We like cats, there are 3 in my house right now so we don't do it to be mean but there are some things you can't tolerate.

my bro's fiancee said find the source of the problem...y the cats keep coming around...if they have water...shelter...food...they will keep coming...do u have puddles of water around the house??? trash cans not lock??? they can get in if they aren't locked...do you have somewhere where there may be shelter they can go to??? she said that's the only way ur gonna get rid of the stink...once u get rid of the cats...use about 1 bottle of resolve in each room...this will take several days and some hard work...then steam clean...finally feebreeze like u've never febreezed b4...and i mean everything...thats' the only way...sry...

Thanks everyone. The reason we have so many is a few have been dropped off in the middle of the night to are area and the majority of them come from the house behind us. It is a rented house and the last 2 families each had 4 or more cats that they never fixed and when they moved they didn't take the cats with them. The ferel cats are going under our porch for protection from the cold and heat. I'm sure that there is probly small puddles of water that are there after a rain storm.

My dad has the same problem and just started shooting them. I hate to do this but I'm not sure where else to turn if the tv stations don't care. The local animal shelter refuse to take them with our the $50 per cat and the told me that the wild cats they prefer not to take. They are all wild. This whole area has a massive issue with wild cats. We are very close to Toledo Ohio and people just drive to our township and drop them off without a care.
I would just drop them off at the shelter but they have had such huge problems with this that they have video cameras now to see who is doing it and to get their license plate so they can prosecute.

My dad had 9 dropped off to his house in one week! I'm just sick off this. The porch is getting old anyways but had a few years left until the wild beasts starting the great tapedshut.gif war between themselves. I think we may end up got tearing the whole thing down and starting over. The porch is really large too and wraps around the side of our house. icon_cry.gif

I'm going to have to scrub around the outside of our house (siding and the doors) like crazy!

Thanks everyone!!!!!!!!

i feel your pain!

the shop i bought was abandoned so long...i had at least 30 cats living in there.

the only solution was trapping them....and taking them to the humane soc.....they even supplied the trap.

feral cats are scarey....they aren't like a sweet lil kitty cat.....they are more like mini tigers or something.....(don't laught ya'll)

even picking up the trap was scarey....they are hissing and trying to get ya.

they are all gone now....there is nothing stinkier than cat pee and poo.

Tell me about it! These things HISS at me while staring at me through my own windows! The whole neighborhood calls them "THE BROTHERHOOD OF THE GHOST CATS", they run in packs and the majority of them are solid white and mainly come out at night.

I'd be kindof scared to try to pick up the traps with a hissing ticked off cat in it too littlecakes. Good luck getting the smell out of your shop you are working on.

AAAHHHH cakepro! ARE YOU TRYING TO SCARE THE POOP OUT OF ME! icon_lol.gificon_lol.gif Seriously though, I once opened the door and a dropped off nasty simease cat walked in like he owned the place. My DH wanted to adpot her but she beat the livin snot out of are other de-clawed cats and would pee in their cat food bowls. The shelter wouldn't even take the cat so I gave the nasy beast to one of my dad's friend with a barn. He said he couldn't take it either--drove him nuts pee-ing everywhere and hissing. I have no idea what happened to the cat and I'm afraid to ask.

Wow! Those were some mean kitties in that story.

they told me they only way to get rid of them was to trap them....some of them were very stelthy...they sneak in the trap...eat the food and sneak out....

there was a particularly mean one i was taking to my car (in the trap)....it was hissing and beating itself up against the sides of the cage(HARD)...i mean it was making itself bloody!...i think it that one had only 1 eye left....and i swear i saw a prison tattoo.....these dudes were hanging out at the biz next door...when they heard the hissing romping cat they were all looking....(scared)...i go..."say buh bye to "mr whiskers"....ha ha.....

i always took my mace with me in case one would escape and try to jump on my head or something....but they never did.

it's amazing the things you'll do when you have to.

the good news is...the cat smell is gone!

My parents own a chemical plant and in the warehouse there were half a dozen or so feral cats. The stench was horrible.

What was REALLY bad was one of the lab people was a rabid animal lover (no pun intended! icon_lol.gif) and would feed the darn things. Oh, my parents were so hacked. They would set out traps for them and she would feed them. Things were really ugly for many months, until eventually they disappeared.

I never did ask what happened to them, though. icon_confused.gif

At least they weren't the scary cats from hell!!! Just stinky!

Sadly, with as litigious as our society is these days, my parents didn't want to risk a lawsuit. There was nothing outlined in the personel policy that strictly forbade feeding feral animals, so they rode it out with the nutty scientist. LOL

I don't mean to make light of your situation...

But I wish I could rent out my cat for situations like this. She is strictly an indoor cat, but if any of the neighbors' cats are visible on our property, she goes completely nuts, making sounds I have never heard out of any cat...scares them away in no time. Unfortunately, it also puts her in a nasty mood for a while and tries to take it out on our kittens.

I can't believe the Humane Society charges for this!! That is ridiculous. It won't solve your immediate problem, but I would write to the local papers about this, that policy has to change!! Isn't that what the animal shelter is for??? The general public should not have to be responsible for every stray animal that shows up on their property!!

Oh, and definitely have your cats tested and for feline leukemia and FIV.

The tests ARE expensive...here's something to ask your vet about. I recently took two kittens in for their first visit. They were from the same litter, so they told me that we only had to test one of them. If one was negative, than the other would be, too. If one was positive, we'd have to test the other. I don't know if this would apply to cats living in the same environment, or if it was just because mine were from the same litter and they were worried about infection from the mother. Worth asking about, though.
