If you have any dairy products in the frosting I'd place the cake in the fridge. I always do. Just be careful about placing it in the fridge with certain foods, because the cake may absorb odors from other foods that are around it. You might even keep it in your garage (if it's not heated). I had a friend keep a cake outside in her car one night (check to be sure temps aren't expected to get tooo low). Whatever you do, I would try and keep it cool. Dairy products need to be kept very cold or they'll spoil.
AS long as the dairy in your icing is a minor liquid ingredient, the icing is fine for 2-3 days at room temperature below 75F if it is an icing like the Wilton buttercream made with butter and milk or cream as the liquid. If it is a pudding, you must refrigerate. If you just used milk in your cake, you can keep it at room temperature. If you have fresh berries as a filling, you must refrigerate.
