I need suggestions for better ways to photograph my cakes. They just don't look the same in the pics as they do in person. Any suggestions are very welcomed!

I have a terrible time taking pics in the daylight. I use a digital camera and they are always too bright. I have a window right next to our dining table so I usually drape a throw over the curtain rod and over the table (with my cake stand under the throw) I then set the cake on there and take the pics at night (and even have to turn the light over the table off)
