Please post pictures of your photo taking areas. I want to set one up, but am not sure what all I need or how to organize it. How do you do yours--or do you just throw up a corresponding colored sheet/fabric and take a picture?

i just found a place in my house w/good lighting and somewhere that I can take pictures w/o a lot distractions in the background. i've done the fabric/sheet thing a few times and it works good. but i think lighting is important, lets you get a clear picture. I also like to fill as much as possible of the picture w/cake....take it w/zoon or close up.

What a great question!

I tried the background thing but really struggled with it. Now I always use my kitchen table for background consistency. I also try to take the pics during the day to get as much natural light as possible. Sometimes this isn't always the case and I have had to take pics at night or in the wee hours of the morning and I am never happy with those, they always turn out too drab.

That is one wonderful thing about digital cameras. I take a tonne of pics from all different angles, some with or without flash, etc., load them on the computer and go through them until I find the ones I like.

Do you deliver and set-up any of the cakes you make? If so, I usually take the pictures once I'm done setting up the cake. In catering halls or houses, they usually have a table set up for the cake. If you're taking the pictures at home, my suggestion would be to take one of your end tables and put a table cover (usually white or match it to the cake color, remember to choose a lighter color if the cake is dark color or darker if cake color is light), set the cake on top and put some little decorations around it (or not). Or you can get one of those round tables that folds. Choose a spot (it could be in front of curtains so that the picture has some background) or a corner in your house that has good lighting and is empty. Hope this helps.

My dining room is very sunny and has sheer, lacey drapes. I take my photos on the dining room table, with various table clothes..I haven't tried the back drape or anything. The sun coming in seems to really show off the cakes. I tried flash and man, buttercream does not come out nicely with flash! It kind of looks shiny and such.

Oh and if you have it, use digital.

My largest kitchen bench is in b/n two windows. Both have drapes. I have a cream sheet that i pin high up with clothes pegs on the drapes, and allow it to cover the whole of the bench as well. I place my cake on top of the covered bench and take a picture. I then edit it to add my name etc.
