I have to make a small wedding cake for this weekend, my sister in law got married and we are just having a little family get together for them, it is their second marrage, so they are like kids again! LOL! They got married in hawaii so they really want to bring some of the hawaii here to states.
So I thought a whimsical cake with Shells and palm trees etc. would be a good idea.
Now my question is has anyone used Fruit roll ups and cookie cutters to make flowers etc.? I thought with the multi color Fruit roll ups it would be pretty cool, not sure if it will work though. So let me know if any of you have ever tryed that or if they know about it. Thanks, Alise
Sounds like an interesting concept. Not sure if they would stick to each other. I might have to give that a try just because. I have made roses out of tootsie rolls and star burst. At least the fruit roll ups are already rolled flat. And my son would be more than willing to eat the cuttings AND the flowers ![]()
SheilaF, it must have been your post that I was referring to because now that you mention it, tootsie rolls were also mentioned. What would be great is if alise could find the flavored tootsie rolls because the colors are actually the same as the starburst colors, yellow, blue, pink, orange and white I think!
I have used fruit roll ups and they work fine, as flat flowers. I pressed some green together and cut out 3 hearts to make a shammrock, and it was nice for a St. Patty's Day cake. There are different kinds...plain colors and mixed, so read the pkg. before you buy, so you get what colors you want.
Me? Photos of something I made? HA! LOL. But of course. Here are both the star burst ones and the tootsie roll ones. I like the way the tootsie roll ones came out better since I used the same directions as for gum paste roses on a stick. The star burst ones, I molded a center hershey kiss shape and then squished out petals to add onto it.
Wow! Thats a great idea! I think I'll try both, mainly Im going to cut out waves from the fruit roll ups.
Now my problem is I'm so excited to do it I can't wait till Friday to start! ![]()
Tomorrow I'm getting the stuff I need from the Grocery Store. Today I had so much fun searching for Hawaiian stuff for the cake and to decorate the house, we have 3 diff. kinds of craft stores here and I think I got something from each store! My husband is going to kill me for spending so much money,
I'm so glad you all have such great ideas!
Sheila those flowers look so great! ![]()
I for sure will attach a pic when I'm done!
Designing a cake, IMO, is more work than making it. I need to go back to the specialty store out by Knotts Berry Farm so I can snap a photo of the display cake they have. I like the way it's set up and want to use that for reference. I'm going to cheat a bit and have some frosting sheets done there for the cakes I need to do for the Audubon next month too. I just don't know if I'll have the time to do a detailed FBCT for those and I want them to look good, so I figure this is a good compramise. And I need to get to work on the pcs for her cake too. As soon as I figure out exactly what the heck it is I"m going to be doing
I squished them out by hand. I didn't want to deal w/having it all stick in a pasta machine thing. I did buy one of those clay rollers, but I couldn't get it to assemble correctly, so I guess it was a waste of funds. The second set (tootsie roll ones) I used the flower cutter for as well, so all the petals were uniform in size.
Ok its done! A whimsical Hawaiian themed cake! I wanted to cut corners because I was not getting paid for this one; I was just told I was doing it! So thats why I went with the fruit roll ups. I made the roses out of starburst's and tootsie Rolls However I decided not to put them on the cake because it would have been too much. Im really glad I learned how to do them though! Thanks everyone!
