can anyone tell this first time flower maker (actually, first time cake decorator) what is the best recipe for making the gum paste and is there anything else you can use without the gum that works as well?

I am assuming that the gum referred to is gum tragacanthe. Not something that is easily come by where I come from in Aus.
If anyone has a recipe for flower paste that is as good or almost as good as the ones with gum in them I would be eternally grateful.

thanks

Welcome to cake central. Gumpaste is a product that dries hard and fast, and it used for decorations and figures.

There are ready to use products and several recipes. The one I use calls for Tylose powder instead of gum trag. The recipe and instructions are at nicholaslodge.com

If you use the search button for australia in the title, you will find several other posts about materials and equipment available.

Thank you so much for your answer.
I am finding Cake Central to be a really exciting place to go.
Especially, being able to see the styles of cakes from the other side of the world - very inspiring.

Thanks again
Alison

Hi, Alison!

Welcome to CC!

Tylose is readily available in OZ, but it often marketed under another name, which escapes me at the moment. It was mentioned in a thread here not too long ago, so I hope anoter Aussie will come to my rescue and give us the name.

Hi Alison,

Welcome to CC. I have a recipe for flower and modelling paste that I have submitted to CC, but for some reason, I must have hit the wrong button somewhere, because I tried to find the link for you and it's not there. If you want it let me know and I'll email it to you.
We have gum trag here, as well as Cellogen and CMC, they all do the same thing, but Cellogen is not as strong as the other two and you need to use twice the amount.

I find that the Cake Art Flower Molding Paste made right here in Brisbane is great for flowers and figures. I buy it through a company called Cake Ornament Company, Cake Art is one of their divisions I think. Its ingredients are sugar, glucose, vegetable fat, vegetable gum (413) food acid (240). Their web address is www.cakeornament.com.au.

Thank you so much for all the information. I should be able to get into Brisbane tomorrow to have a look around. There is not much here on the Sunshine Coast to choose from.
Can't wait to get into it!

Thanks again
Alison

Alison, there is a cake dec.shop that has recently opened on Nicklin Way, Currimundi - not sure what stuff she has yet,I'm going there tomorrow.
You can use flowerpaste for flowers - I use the " John Quai Hoi " paste ( if you want to make it,you'll need a strong mixer like a kenwood - I can give you the recipe, just let me know icon_biggrin.gif ).

Hi Julie,

I live in West Woombye. On the way to Dulong. I work up at the Nambour General Hospital.

Look forward to hearing from you.
