The half round is used because most people don't have an oven that will accomodate an 18 or 24in pan so you bake half the cake-half the round pan.

I believe a half round is a half circle. (Cut one layer across the middle and stack it to make a semi-circle) A contour cake is baked in a special pan that has rounded edges instead of sharp edges. It has a soft rounded curve at the edges of the top layer.

Thanks Jen

So would you say a contour pan is like an oval pan?
I am having a hard time picturing it.

Thanks for you input

The contour pan is a round pan just like any other except instead of a sharp edge, the top edge is rounded off. They are used mostly for fondant because on a regular round pan fondant has a tendency to crack at such a sharp edge. Hope that helps,
Heather

Do a contour pan search on the Internet. Here is one site that carries them, though the picture isn't that great.

Here is what I found to help you get the picture. Hope I do this right. First is 1/2 circle pan set, second is contour pan.

It can be oval, but that doesn't make it contour. The contour is the bottom "corner" of the pan. It gives the cake a slightly domed shape, though the bottom is actually flat. Here is a picture:
