I want to start getting alittle more adventurous with cake decorating and I can't wait until my next Wilton class (#2)...so I thought I might like to fool around with some fondant and gumpaste to sort of get a feel for the two etc....but I can't find dummy cakes. Michaels (here in Canada or at least where I live) don't sell them and really, that is the only real craft store around here that has cake decorating supplies. So, I ended up getting 3 styrofoam disc things for flowers that are about 1 1/2" thick or so...I thought I could maybe glue them together to make one tier...

So, do you treat your styrofoam before 'practicing' on it?

Do you use 'practice' icing (you know, the kind that you wouldn't want to dip your fingers into) or do you use BC, RI...etc...??? Or just plain fondant???

Anyway, I'm going to try an actual cake shop to see if they sell them. I don't want to pay an arm and a leg for them (example, shipping/handling and exchange rate) if coming from the States or someplace else)...

I have used regular styrofoan like that for cake dummies. I cover them with clear contact paper, or wide clear tape. It keeps the icing from sticking in the styrofoan. A regular cake decorating store is more likely to have the dummies-they have a smooth surfact that you can use directly. As for practice icing, an all shortening recipe will have a very long shelf life, so you can scrape it off and do it over.

the last night of my gumpaste class one of the ladies forgot to bring a cake. The instructor sent her out into the store (mchaels) to the floral section and had her purchase 2 8 inch round styrofoam circles. they were each about 2-3 inches high. and they came in a 2 pack. she made her dummy cake right there in class.

so I guess I say all that to say try the floral section in michaels. it was the green lookin kind of styrofoam.

I found some without having to go to a cake shop. I found them at the Bulk Barn for any of you in Canada looking for them and they were fairly cheap as well.
Thanks
