Wedding Cake - What Size?

If I were to make a two tier wedding cake, could it be 12" round on bottom and 6" round on top? Originally they wanted three tier and I was going to do 6/9/12. Would 6/8/12 have looked better? They don't need a ton of cake. There will only be about 50 at the wedding.

personally, I think it would fine, and it would look good separated rather than directly stacked. In between the tiers, you can use flowers or some other decoration to fill the space between the tiers.
