I'm needing to know what to use to thin down to write on cakes with? I didn't know there was so many, I'm wanting to accent and possibly write on 50th Anniversary cake, I need to know wich of the dusts to order PLEASE!!

Bump for help, do I use luster dust, pearl poweder, and it says to thin with alcohol, what kind of alcohol is it talking about. I need to get this ordered as i have a cake due in 2 1/2 weeks and I need to get it in to practice with it. Thanks

are you writing words? if so, you might want to use edible food writers. if you're wanting to paint i would get the color you want in luster dust. pearl dust i think looks best when brushed all over your decorationg. it adds a beautitul shimmer, but no color. you can mix the luster dust with alcohol, such as vodka, everclear, or lemon extract. you have to play around with the amounts, just add a little at a time till you get the right consistency. does that help?

Yes I'm wanting to write words, like the cake in my photos, but I'm wanting them in gold since it's the 50th Anniversary. So if I use Lemon extract will that make it tast lemony? I don't want to use anything alcoholic on the cake. So what's the best to write with? Can I get the edible food writers in gold? Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

i don't know if it'll leave a lemony taste or not... i've always used vokda. the alcohol evaporates away, and just leaves the color. i know the food writers have yellow and orange, but i don't think they have a true gold. what i think i would do, is write the words with royal icing, and when it dries paint it with gold luster/sparkle dust. they sell the food writers on this site, if you want more info on those. its under the food coloring/gel paste tab in the shop. only trouble is, they're out of stock. but you can start reading about them here.

Do they sell a mold that I could use to do the royal lettering in? I wouldn't trust myself to do the writing freehanded.

you can buy a lettering press set. michaels should have them, or your local deco store. you can choose your style of lettering, and press the letters to create an imprint in your cake for you to follow with your icing. i would definitely practice too. its hard to keep your hand steady while writing letters, even with a guide to follow.

I got this recipe here, but haven't tried it yet. The original post I got it from was http://www.cakecentral.com/cake-decorating-ftopict-43581.html and has instructions. You would use Luster Dust, probably Old Gold color.

Pipeable Gold

2 ts. Powdered sugar
2 ts. gold silver or metallic dusting powder
clear alcohol
1 ts. piping gel

Thanks so much. I only have the small thing of luster dust, do you think that would equal 2 tsp? Or would I be better off just highlighting the words with it?
