Many of you younger folks probably don't know who he is so you're excused icon_lol.gif but a friend of mine wants me to make a cake for her older brother who is a huge Tom Jones fan and I'm trying to figure out what to do.

I'm not good enough with gumpaste or fondant to actually make a "person" that would resemble a human being and I think a FBCT would be too hard to replicate an actual person's face (at least for me).

Any ideas or suggestions? It's only an 8" round cake.

Thanks.

Sounds like edible image time to me. ...

You know what would be so funny. Like just the big lapel open ruffle collared shirt thing with the gold chains... you know what I mean? Kind of how people make Jersey cakes or bustier cakes, just the top part. And a big microphone some where too maybe on the side of the cake?

This might sound crazy, but I hope it helps.

Or.....
You could do the Simpsons Cartoon version of Tom Jones in FBCT. That would be cool too.

The cartoon version sounds like it would be cute. You could put fondant "gold chains" around the edge.

Yes you definitely have to get the gold chains in there somewhere. thumbs_up.gif

I LOVE those ideas....keep em coming!

I also thought maybe I could write "it's not unusual..." somewhere.

I love the gold chains, too. I'm going to check out the Simpsons idea. I don't really know it since I'm not really a huge Tom Jones fan myself.

How about these for an FBCT. It's how I did my Elvis cake (but I did the photo to sketch for you using the program that someone from CC recommended a while back).

MEEOW, what a fox he is. I also think that it is edible image time. The marvel of technology, what used to take an artist hours now takes a computer minutes. icon_lol.gif

What about a microphone with a bunch of panties around it? Wasn't that the thing, to throw your panties or bra at him? You could make colorful panties out of fruit rollups....

OOOOOHHHH!!!! This is turning into a very funny thread !!! ( I wish this were my order!!!) I was about to suggest that KopyKake can do the image for you but I'm now agreeing with the pile of panties and bras idea. My only addition would be some hotel room keys thrown in! This will be a very funny memorable cake! You must post the second you're done!

HAHAHA icon_lol.gif You ladies have me cracking up!!

I haven't checked this post for a while since the cake was for last Sunday but if you knew the person it was for, the panties were DEFINITELY not in order icon_surprised.gif

After all that, we decided not to do a strictly Tom Jones cake, but to incorporate Tom Jones music, Roy Orbison music, his guitar that he loves to play and just music in general (plus a few books since he is an avid reader as well). This is what I came up with but if I ever have to do a Tom Jones cake again (for someone with more of a sense of humor and who spends less time in church) I will keep the panties in mind icon_lol.gif

Well, I, for one, am embarrassed that I did not look at your posting date before I jumped on the "panty" band wagon with my suggestions. If I had I might have guessed that your cake was finished by now! Anyway, I just saw your "tame" cake and it's beautiful!!!! Your friend, her brother and their company must have been thrilled.
P.S. But,geez, what kind of guy can love Tom Jones and not have a sense of humor??!! ( I think Tom is very cool BTW.)

The first thing that I thought of was Carlton from the sitcom Fresh Prince of Belair. icon_lol.gif I loved reading this tread. I wasn't born in the 60's, but I think I definately spent some time there in one of my former lives icon_rolleyes.gif

That cake turned out just LOVELY. Makes me want to go and make one just for the fun of it.

Thanks to all who contributed to this tread, I really enjoyed sitting here in an empty work office listening to The Beatles and smiling and giggling out loud. Life is to short not to smile and laugh. I needed this. thumbs_up.gif

Wow......this is a great thread!! I love Tom Jones too!! And he really is very good looking for a man of his age. I was just laughing at the Carlton comment!! I actually watched that show and could picture him dancing and singing that!!! LOL

Cute cake too!! Didn't see where it was Tom Jones related, but very nicely done!! I may try some of your ideas some time...

One of my fondest memories was going to see Tom Jones in concert with my mom. I was probably early 20's and mom was in her 50's. We both had binoculars. So he comes out and everybody is screaming and he is looking real fine. We both are looking at him with our binoculars and I say to mom, "gees mom, he doesn't look very old" and she says "I don't know - I haven't made it up to his face yet!" OMG - I laughed so hard. What great memories!

i know this thread is a bit older, but i wanted to comment on the very cool cake! living in nashville, music is huge around here, and i liked the montage of things you put on there to reflect the client's interests.

someone else mentioned in this thread about a program that helped them do their sketches on the computer? could you fill me in quickly on that?/ thanks
