I looked at the royal icing recipe here and some people say to leave it out for 24-48 hours to dry. Does "out" mean uncovered? Will your cookies not dry out too?

Most cookies will draw some of the moisture from the icing. It takes a good while to dry the icing enought to package the cookies, but I have even had them dry enough with just overnight.

I found that my cookies soften a little in a couple of days after we pack them. Drying them overnight is just right for packing for me too.
