OK, I'm freaking out because the base color of the cake is to be a grayish sky blue. I have navy blue, royal blue and sky blue gel colors. I have been experimenting like CRAZY in little bowels and cannot achieve this color. Do I have to add a different color to the blue? PLEASE HELP ME!

Do you have black or grey? That would help get to blue/grey.

Yes, I have tried to add black to the various blues but this is not doing the trick, maybe I need to add more black? The craziest part of this cake is that the groom is an artist and HE sketched out the design and painted the colors he would like on a piece of paper. I'm just not sure he will understand If I cannot get the SAME exact color that he used.

And to make matters worse...the whole cake is this color and when you are dealing with this huge amount of icing YOU CANNOT MAKE MISTAKES!!! Waaaayyyyy to time consuming and costly to start over! It's not like I'm making one batch of frosting for an 8" cake...you know what I mean?

Maybe you could add a little purple. When I've needed something purple before I get to the nice dark shade I need, it goes through shades of gray until I get the amount of coloring I need.

I would try adding violet or a tiny bit of red to the sky blue and see if that helps! I'm not sure if you are looking for a some-what denim color but I think that is what I did to get the gray-blue color for the denim cake in my photos. I could've added a little black too, not sure! I need to start writing down what exactly I add to make certain colors!!! My memory just isn't that good.

I thought about purple but wouldn't ya know..Rhondie doesn't have any PURPLE!!!! AHHHHH!!!! I mixed a little more black with the sky blue color and I came pretty close but to me it looks like a "dirty" color instead of a "clean" color.
I can't believe I agreed to make this cake! I'm nuts! Actually I love a challenge and let me tell you...I sure got a challenge...yep, I'm nuts!

Is there any way that you can ask the customer/artist for assistance??
If not, check out a color wheel on-line.
Don't forget that most colors will deepen overnight.

It would be a tad bit lighter than the color of your patch cake color...so I'll try some red too..thanks!

rhondie - Hi! Relax - first, i understand that the groom is an artist and gave you the color to work with, but being that he got his color working on a totally different art medium, you may not be able to achieve the exact same color, but you can get close. Cut back a little on the black with the sky blue - that might do the trick.

Color wheel chart is a good idea. NO, no, no I'm not going to call the groom, the next thing I know he would be at my door mixing the colors for me (son of a lady at my church). Well then again, it would be his fault if the color wasn't quite right. Maybe... Thanks for all the fantastic ideas!

I agree that the artist was using a different color medium, but if he mixed colors to get the color he desired, it may be prudent for you to ask him what colors he mixed. That way, if you need to make a trip to the store to get a color you are missing, you still have time.

Don't forget that red + blue = purple, so maybe you could mix some red and blue together in a separate bowl and then add the resulting purple to your other icing?

I agree with another poster that Wilton's Delphinium Blue might be a good color to use (and maybe add a little gray to that?).

Good luck ... I know how frustrating it can be to try to achieve the right color sometimes!! icon_cry.gif
