Please help, I love red velvet cake and all recipes say to use 1-2oz of red color, but what kind??? I used the red food coloring and that did not change the color and the red die we use for frosting...well that just seems to be an awful lot of die and won't it make it bitter???

My Red Velvet recipe calls for 1-2oz of the liquid food coloring....such as McCormicks.

Yes, it IS a lot of dye, not a typo. Martha Stewart has a recipe for it also.

typically red velvet cakes use the liquid food colorings you can find in the grocery store.

You can buy a small bottle (1oz I believe) of liquid red food coloring in the spice aisle at the grocery store. You will want to use the liquid kind as opposed to the Wilton paste.

It takes a lot, but it looks so pretty.

Just FYI in case you didn't know...There is a red velvet cake mix. I believe Duncan Hines makes it and it is EASY and yummy!

I use the liquid. I buy the store brand (Kroger), it works just as well, and cheaper.

I use the paste. You don't need nearly as much. If you use the stuff at the grocery store you're lips will be red, but with the paste it won't. My recipe calls for a teaspoon of paste.

This is what it calls for
1/4 cup red food coloring (or 1 teaspoon paste)

Well, I never thought of it like this, but I'll bet all the liquid is, is watered down paste food color. Hmmmmmmmm.

I remember in Sugar Rush, this Pastry Chef made Red Velvet cake and according to him, the Chocolate taste will cover up the bitterness of the Red coloring, since you need to add a lot of it. icon_smile.gif
