Hi Everyone,

Does anyone use Clay Push Molds for their decorating? I was wondering if this would work with fondant or gumpaste. I was just looking on ebay and I saw soooo many cute little molds that would be great for cakes but I don't know if it's been used before. These are really great and I hope they can be used. They are so cheap, this would save lots of money. Look forward to hearing back from everyone. Thanks

oh boy oh boy has this been discussed to death before (or is that argued into the ground)

in a nut shell:

some of us (including me) -- sure why not. just dust w/ powdered sugar to be sure it unmolds

others of us: NO way! -- not certified food safe, etc.

----------

comes down to personal preference -- but yes they do work if certified food safe is not an issue for you.

I use the push molds and really like them.

It is totally a person's choice so please do not turn this into a "free-for-all"...happy, happy, happy icon_lol.gif

I fall into the "sure, why not" camp as well...and if you're concerned about it, you can use them and specify that decorations are not to be eaten. icon_smile.gif

I'm sorry, I guess I should have done a search first before I posted. I don't want to cause any trouble. I think I will try it, I don't bake for anyone but my family since I am still new and I live in Maryland so it's not legal to sell cakes out of my home anyway. I could try to put some plastic wrap on the mold so it will be safe and come out easily. Thanks for your opinions everyone. icon_smile.gif

I've used them before. I just wash them with hot soapy water before use and I usually use them with gumpaste or a 50/50 mixture so no one wants to eat gumpaste decorations anyways. If you put something like saran wrap in them you might negate the finer details of your mold. Also Nicholas Lodge on his videos I have always says to dust your gumpaste not the mold and you still get the coverage of not sticking but finer details come out better. Hope this helps some.

the plastic will ruin your item.

I also fall into the "SURE, WHY NOT?" been using them since they FIRST started to come out...no one has died nor been poisoned! lol

and, yes..this WILL eventually turn into a free for all! lol

if you are worried, just make sure that you do as the other poster suggested...make a note or label for your people to NOT eat the decorations!

Good luck and please post your picture!

There was a whole bunch of them clearanced at my local Michael's. There were fruit ones, stars, little animals, etc. I think they were about $3, so maybe it might help to check out a craft store for some deals!

I've used them with candy melts with great success. The dragon and frog and unicorn on the castle in my pics were from push molds.

Thank you all so much. I will make sure not to use plastic and to just clean them well. My family are not big fondant fans so it will be no problem telling them not to eat the decorations. Thanks again everyone.

mqguffey I just looked at your castle cake and the molds turned out great. I wish I was more artistic like other people on here but I never have been. I'm glad there is a way to make my cakes look great without stressing over this stuff. Your cakes look great.
